Mk2 Corona - which W58 shifter required? Mon, 01 December 2003 11:23 Go to next message
Hey guys, was hoping one of the buffs might be able to answer this - GiantTomato particularly!

The W58 comes with about 5 different shifter positions. Which one of these is required for a Mk2 Corona with the factory M engine?

And (GiantTomato specific)... if I fit a JZ, will the same box work or will the (slightly) different engine position mean I need a different shifter? Don't want to cut any holes.

You will want the rearmost shifter position (out of an MA70 7MGE W58) - the one with the shifter has a little extension and pops out over the output spline cover. You don't want the centrally located one (MA61) or the extension type (like a 2JZGE W58). You definitely don't want the really forward position.

Yes, that same box will be just fine with a JZ conversion, but you might need to trim the rear part of the gearshift hole in the tunnel.

EDIT: Will take pics and email them to you tomorrow.

Thanks Ed - I tried looking for the pic but couldn't find it.

Actually I think it is more like the one next to it! Hard to tell from the pics, but the MA61 is the 2nd one, and MA70 style looks to be the third. Not sure where the others come from.

Actually the one on the far left appears to be an MA61 shifter. Here's a pic of my MA61 shifter next to a JZA80 one:

Yeah, MA70, MX73 is third from left (ie, 2nd most rear)
The most rearward one hangs past the rear of the input guard, where as the 2nd most rear stops about 5mm shy of it

No it wasn't (not that I recall anyway)
It was left-most coz otherwise if would have been close enough for me to put into the Cressida, but it was a few inches short, so I had to source a proper one.
Feel free to prove me wrong with some pics, coz I'm only going by what I remember
