icon5.gif  18rg performance mods? Mon, 01 December 2003 22:49 Go to next message
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows some good performance mods for an 18rg (running in an ra23) that will give me some good bang for buck?

I'm planning on swapping the engine out later so I'm not going to go nuts with forgies, or over bore or anything like that ...

Currently still have the stock carbies, valves, cams etc...
but I do have (and god does this make it loud) extractors to 2.5" exhaust, and air intake.

Looking to spend in the order of $1000 - $1500 ??

If anyone can give me some advice and a rough price guide would be fantastic Smile

Cheers.

On that budget there's not a whole lot you can do. You might just squeeze a new pair of Webers into the budget along with a good tune, and that should net you a few extra hp.

Frankly I don't think NA mods are worthwhile on an 18R-G; they already make lots of hp as they are, so pushing it much further takes a lot of money. Forced induction on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. Smile

usually a good tune of the carbies does the world of good (if they need it) I have heard that you can put in the efi cams on the exhaust side (or intake I forget) as they are different to the carby ones? Can anyone prove or disprove this?

What's the likely benefit of either a cam grind or webers?

Is it going to be anything I'm going to notice?

Norbie: While I would love to get some forced induction into the 18rg I'm currently saving up for a 3sgte conversion Smile
so that side of things will have to wait.

I think I might just hold off until I get the new engine (I get my celica back friday after a full rebuild of the motor) that way I can just engine the 18rg as is - and save a bit of cash along the way Smile

Unless anyone else can think of something in the budget area, that would make a big amount of difference?

Cheers for all your help guys Smile

If you're doing an engine conversion, don't waste your time and money on the 18R-G. Maybe put on a decent exhaust if it doesn't have one already, but any further than that and the cost:benefit ratio goes out the window. Save up for that 3S-GTE and in the meantime just accept the 18R-G how it is!

if u are definately gonna do mods, then do the cams, u dont have to pull the head off {$200 savings on VRS}, get some lumpy cams ground {research this first}, then do clearances ect and then tune cause if u tune first then you'll just waste cash on a 2nd tune, that'll set u back about $700-$800 depending on where u go, less if u do the work yourself

talk to the witzl as hes selling a pair of 45mm webers
