1JZ TRD thermostat

Just wondering if anyone is running one??
Stock is 82d the TRD one is 72d.
Does the engine actually run alot cooler??
I have 2 problems.
1. the thermo fan switch (90-85) turns on but the engine temp doesn't drop below 85 very often and turn the fan off (still to be verified waiting for temp gauge).
2. when I give it a good thrashing (eg over the hills) and come up on some traffic and have to slow down the engine temp rises alot (usually at 1/2 on the stock gauge goes up to 3/4), obviously because of the lack of airflow and the fan not flowing enough. Will a 72d thermostat help this problem by having a lower operating temp to start from??
FYI: it has a custom 520x360 2row(57mm) dimple cored K&J alloy radiator, 13" thermo fan, 1/2 block by the IC (600x250x100).
Your thoughts people!?!?!

To begin with i thought the 1JZ thermostat is around 90 degrees? My car wont run any cooler than 90. My thermo switches on at 95 and off again at 90, cant you get a different switch, like a davies craig one, arent they adjustable? Its a pain that you thermo is so small, my radiator is 410x450x60 Adrad alloy radiator, I have a 16" fan which pulls the temp down from 95-90 in about 30 seconds at idle.

as long as the cooling system is keeping its pressure and holding water then i wouldn't be too concerned.
Im not sure what temp gauge you are using, the factory digital jobbie in the Limited models sit dead on the middle whether its friggin artic or if its a sweltering hot day. Mine on the track thrashing the absolute ring off it and it stays pretty much dead in the middle
Toyota dont need gauges, they need 3 lights... blue for cold, green for good, red for 'time for a tow'.
My CRX on the other hand which im pretty sure has a tiny crack in the head will sit on a constant temp, then when you stop at lights it gets warmer like to 3/4 then when i drive off it goes back to 1/2. The bloodying thing is pressurising the cooling system like wild, pumping out water through the over flow and the hoses swell to like twice their size... BUT inside as far as i could tell it was running fine, its only when i got home and went to check under bonnet i realised what it was doing..
So yeah, if the cooling system holds pressure, keeps its water then maybe just check the flow isnt being restricted to the radiator too badly, maybe a nice big thermo in front of it.

A different switch is the easy solution for the thermo problem.
But if I let the temp get to 95 before it turns on the 13" thermo may not be able to bring the temp down very quickly.
But that doesn't help the issue of it getting hot when you thrash it then have to slow down in traffic.
It would prolly make it worse as it has to get to 95 before the fan comes on.
It is fine cruising or sitting in traffic, you can leave it sitting for 1/2hr and the gauge doesn't move.
So I thought a TRD thermostat & the current thermo switch would be good!?!?! Thoughts??
No room infront for a thermo, the 13" covers the full height of the core as it is. I think it is that mutha of an IC blocking too much air flow when you aren't at speed!!!
FYI it has 82 stamped on the thermostat, confirmed by the pot on the stove.

If you already have the thermostat out, maybe you should try the TRD one. Im sure Toyota make the engine run at that temp for a reason, then again TRD are an arm of toyota, so if the cooler one is genuine maybe there is no problem with running it. Perhaps you need to look at getting more air through that radiator. Can you make a shroud and fit 2 fans on?
I have been limited for space aswell, thats why i had to go a small alloy and thermofan. Luckily I have the extra height to fit the 16", mind you it's a perfect fit, the shroud touches the end tanks

Thats what I thought too.
I don't think I'll worry too much till I get a proper temp gauge and see exactly what is happening.
What pressure is the stock 1JZ radiator cap?? I think I have a 1.0??
