4ac temp sensor question. help please!! Tue, 02 December 2003 10:18 Go to next message
Does anyone know what resistance the temp sensor should read at cold and at operating temp??

Accurate resistances would be appreciated thanks.

Toyota service manual provides the following resistance figures between the terminal and ground ...

At 50 deg C (122 deg F) => 226 ohms
with tolerance (+33.6 / -36.6)

At 115 deg C (239 deg F) => 26.4 ohms
with tolerance (+1.71 / -2.21)

No figure for cold but presume might be 226 ohms +33.6
i.e between 226 and 259.6 ohms

Hope this helps.
What problem, if any, are you having ?

I want to make sure that my temp gauge is functioning correctly and I was going to make sure that the sensor is doing its thing first.

I am amazed at those tolerances though.....they are huge!!

Looks like I will have to pull the sensor out and bung it in the kettle......dang.

The large tolerance is at the lower temperature end which is prety much irrelevant.

All this means is that to check if your sender is operating properly, next time you have your car up to normal running temperature with the radiator cap on, remove the wire from the temperature sender and measure the resistance between the sender terminal and earth. It should be between 24 and 27 ohms.

If your resistance measurement is less than 24 ohms you "might" have a problem.

Sorry mate. Just reread your original post, those tolerances are much nicer......Thanks for the help.

Any idea what the sensor itself is made from?? I dont know of anything apart from carbon that has a negative temperature coeffecient. Just curious Rolling Eyes .
