ST205 inspection Wed, 03 December 2003 05:18 Go to next message
Does anyone that owns a GT-Four want to come with me to Just Jap (Kirrawee) and inspect this ST205 for sale? I need to know what has to be done to it and/or if it's a worthwhile buy for the price, which is negotiable.

Thanks.

I'll come for a cruise if you want...

I assume its a locally delivered 205... If so give Toyota a call on 1800 252 097 and give them the VIN and the build number and they'll be able to tell you if its matches their list, if it doesn't I would be a bit dubious about purchasing it.

Main things to look for on a GT-Four are:
-Turbo smoke... give it a boot full and see if it puffs white smoke... best done with a friend following you while you test drive.
-Valve stem seal smoke... Let the car idle for about 10 minutes and see if it blows white smoke...
-Be careful of lowered cars... a car which has been lowered on the cheap can cause excessive wear on the driveshafts etc.
-Rip the ECU codes... Jump terminals E1 and TE1 on the test connector and check any codes given against the codes list at www.alltrac.net
-Turbo condition... Get the turbo spooled up in third or fourth gear and check that the factory boost guage shows the boost reaching at least maximum level... too much higher and someones upped the boost... lower and the turbo is in poor condition

Then just do the usual stuff... check the CV boots... oil condition... look for dodgy modifications... listen for diff whine and CV joint clunkage.

Send us an email if you want me to check the car out with you (gtfour@elektranix.com)

I'm looking to front-cut it for my RAV4, not test drive the car. It's been hit in the front, cracking the sump and damaged end housing on the gearbox. Because of this, a compression test can't be done, but I'm going to get the guy that's there to do a leak-down test instead. Apart from that, they say the rest appears to be normal. It's an import with Blitz this-and-that (modified), I'm not sure how many km's on the clock but it's apparently a fairly new model. They don't even know what year model it is, but they can't get it to start. So I want to see if it's worth buying as-is or not. Basically I just need someone who knows what they're looking for in an ST205 to lead me through this maze and tell me if it's worth it or not.

I can always replace the end-housing of the gearbox with the one off my RAV, and the same with the sump.

Cheers.

How much...
does it include the water to air intercooler, ecu and engine loom etc. (i assume so if they tried to start it)

The sump on the 205's isn't quite the same as on the gen2's and is an alloy sump and oil pan which may be a bit of a shit to replace if its totally stuffed

Intercooler, ECU, loom, the works. It's a Jap import. Compliancing on this could be a bitch, because emissions standards on Jap vehicles are tested at 50km/h. Confused

Since I don't know what year model it is yet, I'm keeping the hopes that it's not the alloy sump/pan. What year did they change those over?

Questions, questions... so much has to be asked on Saturday. They're asking 4½ for it, but it seems they're negotiable.

Anyone need a 3S-FE in good nick? Wink

I thought it was like that on all the ST205's... they have the oil filter on the bottom of the engine because they have this alloy oilpan / sump setup... its a really good setup for ripping your oil filter off Smile

Ask a ST205 owner for 100% verification though... I'm just recalling what I've seen from GEE120 and other members 205's and at one stage I was going to buy one as I stuffed my sump but it was all too much hassle (new oil pump.. oil cooler... piping for the oil cooler... prob can't be done with the engine in the car or at least looked difficult)

Do you know Gary's (GEE120) phone number? Looks like he hasn't posted on here for a while...

Anyone know Gary's number?

Obviously Gary would be a good choice to bring along and check out this 205, but if I can't get a hold of him before say Friday, you still wanna see it Toobs?
