icon14.gif  Fine or standard quality (DSC)? Thu, 04 December 2003 06:16 Go to next message
With digital cameras, u have the option to take photos using the FINE or STANDARD setting

what are the differences?

the file sizes are halved in standard mode... i.e. bout 2mb for fine and 1 mb for standard ....

i cant the differences on the computer .. i am guessing when u print it out u can tell the difference ?

From http://search.dpreview.com/forums/search.asp?query =fine&forum=1002&fields=subject

The difference is the amount of compression used to store the picture. Normal will use a more aggresive algorithm resulting in a small jpg file but with more artifacts. Fine will result in a larger jpg due to less compression but with less artifacts. Printing a 4x5 or 4x6 will probably not show much of a difference but if you plan to blow up any of your shots, the artifacts will start to become more noticeable.

The uncompressed file sizes for both will be the same only the photo compressed in fine mode will be of a higher quality.

Found my answer dont worry - why did i post this on a car website ? Shocked

Zoom in heaps when you look at it on the computer and you'll see the quality difference,
We tested this out when we first got our now camera

Nah, we did it indoors too
and the quality difference was visible at about 5000% zoom Razz

but outdoors should be more visible

A std 6 x 4 is printed at photo lab at 300 dpi. So your if your pic is at 2400 x 1200 (2.88 megpxl) it's a larger than necessary file size and my sisiters biggest complaint at work. When you enlarge however that's when it makes a difference. Try to use tiff's if possible as there is no loss due to compression as there is with jpegs. had to work out the same deal with mine, high quality and super high are the same res but different compression rates. If you want to really large enlargements then you need to save in raws format and fine a lab with reguar fractal software. If you have a few days look it up and read away. Great new stuff but needs big computers and bigger dollars. But will take any raw image and enlarge without loss to extreme sizes.

So THATS the difference, the level of compression, aaaahhhhh, that makes soooo much more sense (I speaks goods engrish)

Thats CAG, you're a champ

No Probs. If anyone wants info or prices let me know as my sis in law works at fletchers castle hill (next to cinemas). Will try to work a deal with her boss for discounts for us technologically minded and cashed up types. Also helps with finding out what everything means.

Edit of previous: EVERYTHING is printed at 300dpi (just to be clearer) but as you imagine you can only take a 2400 x 1200 so far before dropping res. Photoshop, image size adjustments, increasing that aparent res will actually deteriorate the quality and increase file size. Having said that you can push res but you will drop physical size to maintain res.

Example: 72 dpi 6 x 8 cm (240x180pxl) will go 300 dpi for photo qual prints and maintain file size but print size will become 2 x 1.5 cm. thats done with resample image off (maintains file size). If done with resample on then file size inreases to 2.15 meg (1000 x 750) but without serious software (thats where regular fractals comes in) image quality deteriorates as you cant add these extra pixles.

Les, take a photo of something at 45 degrees. Make sure there's lots of contrast between the object and the background.

You should be able to see more artefacts in the normal compression one.

FWIW, normal is fine for taking photos. It's only if you're anal about image quality (like me) or you're gonna do some graphics work with the photos that you'll want to use fine.

They correspond to the JPEG quality, ie: 75% or 95%...
