MX83 vs MX73

Hi all, nice to meet you.
I am interested in buying a Cressy for my first car.
They're comfortable and reliable by all accounts, and the one I've ridden in was very nice. Importantly, when I can drive fairly well (and have the cash!), they will allow me to transfer a more powerful 6 cylinder engine in.
I've always been on the lookout for the Grande MX83, but I have recently been looking at the 85-88 MX73 models, because they are a LOT cheaper ($2000 approx.)
I've done quite a bit of research, but it's all over the place in terms of bits and pieces.
I was hoping some members here could give me insight into the differences between the models? Even recommendations for other cars etc..
I understand the MX73 has a 2.8L engine, while the whole car weighs a little less, has a few less options in terms of sunroof, LSD etc..
Please fill in the gaps, and help me get started!
Thanks,
Stephen

The differences are basically "everything". Completely different car. The MX73 is similar mechanically to the MA61 Supra, while the MX83 is similar to the MA70 Supra. Both have plenty of upgrade potential since they originally came with M series engines (ie lots of engine bay room).

Regarding Sunroof and LSD.
All MX73 and MX83 had the option of a factory fitted sunroof. But for some reason, only about 2% of the MX73 original owners chose that, whereas about 75% of the MX83 owners chose it.
LSD, only 91-92 GRANDE MX83's came stock with LSD, but all other models can be swapped in from their respective Supra sisters, as Norbie states.
Yes, the MX73 is about 200kg lighter, but only has 4 stud rims, where as the MX83 has 5 stud (easier to find sexy mags). But remember that you can convert the MX73 to 5 stud with a bit of effort and money.
FWIW, the MX83 also has the leather seats option.
But above all, if you get an MX73, get a GLX-i, and if you get an MX83, get a Grande.
The extra features are worth the extra cost

These two words don't fit together when you talk about Cressidas!!!
But you raise a good point none-the-less
A question dude, what do you want the car for? just a cruiser, or something more serious?
The MX83 has a better towing capacity if that makes a difference

I could'nt decide this at first either. I was set on an MX73 and even bought one before I found an MX83 in awesome condition for the right price in a car yard. I have never looked back as I believe the MX83 to be worlds apart from the MX73 in terms of ride and interior comfort. I think they both look cool though. If you are keen for a 1J and are lucky enough to find a JZX81 half cut the conversion into a MX83 is one weekend's work with nothing more that fluids and belts to buy on top of the cost of the half cut! This was too hard to ignore for me.
Having said that I have a MX73 for sale!! No rego but good paint (dark greeny blue) and perfect for a conversion. $2000.

I agree; we bought an MX73 for that exact reason. It 'feels' bigger on the inside and even though it doesn't have some of the refinements of the MX83 we preferred it over the latter. Mind you, we paid as much for our MX73 (at the time) as some MX83's because of the condition.
At the end of the day it's personal choice. Sit in both and make your own decision. As far as engine upgrades go, either one is just as easy.
BTW, now that I have the Mark 2 on the road I will be selling our MX73. Asking more than 2k but is one of the better ones around.

Thank you for the input, it has given me some food for thought.
I expect I may purchase an MX73, although I have an agent who attends auctions, and they don't come up much there at all.
Am I best off sticking to car yards/Trading Post etc?
I may post a WTB: MX73 in the Cars for Sale/Wanted forum, if you who have them would post details?
Appreciate it.

Private is generally cheaper than yards, but auctions always have a few bargains
A few years ago, we saw a 1995 Hyundai (what ever top of range was, full electrics, electric seats etc etc etc) go for $5000

The MX83 Grande comes with ABS, LSD, 6-stack CD, leather seats, sunroof and electric seat adjsutment and most are standard. I reckon that's a pretty impressive list. I couldn't afford one though because the Grandes are still around $8000-$10000 private or $10000-$13000 dealer.

Only the 91/92 Grandes come with that, the 89/90 have a few less options, namely LSD

/me goes off searching for the 6 Stack CD player
just to correct you both slightly.
There were about 4 or 5 small running changes from October 1990 to the model end in December 1992, but basically....
Grande - Double DIN stereo with single In dash CD is standard, no 6 stack option from the factory.
The Sunroof is optional on the Grande and GLX, although a fair number of Grande's were fitted with them in Japan and shipped that way. Toyota Australia also fitted quite a few sunroofs locally "pre-delivery" to meet customer orders for specific colours - All GLX sunroofs were local units. - they were Toyota facory units installed by USC at Taren Point on behalf of Toyota.
Standard Grande features from November 1990 were..
Leather Trim, ABS, Cruise Control, LSD, Pwr Steer, Pwr Windows, Pwr Mirrors, Climate Control Air Conditioning. Sunroof was $1,694 option.
ABS / LSD and Leather were NOT available on GLX or GL
Climate control Air cond was $1,955 to $2,181 option on GLX (depending on order date)
Model Availability..
MX73 - GLi - November 1985 to December 1988 - DOHC (120kW)
MX73 - GLXi - November 1984 to October 1985 - SOHC (103kW)
MX73 - GLXi - November 1985 to September 1988 - DOHC (120kW)
MX83 - GL - October 1988 to November 1990 - DOHC (142kW)
MX83 - GLX - October 1988 to December 1992 - DOHC (142kW)
MX83 - Grande - November 1990 to December 1992 - DOHC (142kW)

I hope I am talking about the same thing... I asked about a Toyota Camry single disk CD at the same time. Maybe that's what the $550 was for. Come to think of it. Baaah fuck it... I can't remember. Don't get your hopes up for $550 'cause I am probably wrong.
