First, I wouldn't go to NRMA just on principal. (Just my experianced opinion)
You can get a green slip before rego as you state you need. I have done this before with AAMI. If you have comp insurance AAMI will give good discount on the green slip. NRMA will only do this if insurance is with them.
I just did the shop around for green slips in the past week.NRMA $580-, AAMI w/out ins $560-, with $380.

It's piss easy to do...
1. Go to this site
http://www.maa.nsw.gov.au/greenslips13prices.htm
enter all your details and it will tell you the prices from ALL companies. Once you have chosen which company you want to go with - call them up and get a greenslip from them. They will ask for the rego due date - you give them the date you EXPECT to get it registered - if you are out by a day or week or so, - it doesn't matter - as long at it's as close as possible. They will ask for the Rego number - tell them TBA as you are getting new plates, so they will need the VIN and possibly Engine Number.
2. Once you have your (Paid) CTP green slip in your hands(Coverage is basically identical between all companies, so just get the cheapest unless you have an adversion to that company or just want to pay too much), and you have your Blue slip and all other paperwork needed for a new registration - receipt, compliance approval papers etc etc go into your local RTA and give it all to them.
3. After a bit of stuffing around, waiting needlessly and boredom while waiting in the RTA, you hand them over the Cash for the Rego, they take their half of the GTP Green slip, they give you a set of plates, and you walk out happy..
4 ( if you need to know how to fit your plates - that's a new thread LOL
Seriously - it is very easy... I have been in the industry for 16 years.
email me if you need further info.

How accurate is that site?
The site doesn't show all the companies and it doesn't Toyota Sprinter as an option.
I'm getting a stock sprinter tomorrow and I just wanna if anyone here knows where to get cheap CTP insurance for it (Sydney, NSW).
People have mentioned Shannons and Just Car, but are they cheap for unmodified cars?
Thanks.

The site is VERY accurate (provided you enter the correct information)
The MAA is the governing body who licence the CTP Insurers. Before ANY company can change their rates, they have to notify the MAA.
as for it not showing the Sprinter - then use "other" - all that means is that the sprinter is not in a different category to say a Cressida/Celica/RAV4 for example
