Just curious, I am sure alot of people here do bring import spare parts for cars themselves.
How does the import duty and taxing system work on this?
I kinda wanna import a bodykit set..... well eventually.

if you are only bringing one in, they may not tax you..
i actually brought in a car spoiler from o/seas on the plane.. no worries.

Yeah, I ended up paying almost $200 when I had my diff sent over from the US (cost about $800). That's a lot of money to pay for, well, nothing really. I want my money back!!

Get the receipt/invoice sent by mail. Ask for item to be sent separately. Ask sender to write 'GIFT' or 'NO MONETARY VALUE' on the package.
Shifty as hell.

Be careful if you change the value of any item you are importing. If it should get lost in the mail any insurance you had on it is gone and you just lose your cash.
I looked at importing a turbo setup for a HiLux but it worked out that it would almost cost as much to fly there myself and bring it home under my arm!

stumbles is on track... i have been importing a fair bit privately of late.
to not pay duty or tax, the payable amount must be less than AUD$50
when you bring in ANY car items for a passenger car, new or second hand, you will pay 15% on the value of the goods.
you will also be asked to pay 10% GST on:
the value of the good
the value of the DUTY
and the value of the POSTAGE (this really shits me)
if the total value of goods+postage is less than AUD$1000 then you can do an informal customs clearance.
if it is over AUD$1000 you must do a formal customs clearance (which costs about $50ish that is a 'stamp the form' charge from customs)
customs will charge on either the receipt/invoice value OR
the estimated value in Aus if they thik the value is too low (they can say whatever they want )
if you put too low a value on it, and try to back it up with dodgy invoices, you will get fined or charged.
also, you can't insure for more than the customs value, so if it gets lost, you are fucked
a mate moved a lot of his car gear with him from the US and paid (iirc) around $1200 in duty and GST!!!!
afaik, the only way to not pay duties (if it goes thru customs) is if it is not actually staying in the country... but i think that has to be formally declared also..
you can work out what the tariff rate is from www.apectariff.org (car parts are generally 15%, unless you caan say it is for a tractor and from 1st jan 2005, will reduce to 5%)
customs phone line (sydney) is 9682 8282

It's often just easier to fly get a bunch of parts and things in person when you are OS and bring them in yourself in your luggage...............I bought three very flash guitars in like this, and all they cared about was how the wood was finished so as to check that I was not bringing in any bugs
