Cressida MX83 open diff to LSD swap Sun, 07 December 2003 07:33 Go to next message

Does anyone know what is involved in swapping the diff from an GLX to a Grande LSD, ie does the LSD use different driveshafts, and is the cradle that the whole thing sits in any different between these two models? Are the diff housings any different in size?
Cheers

Housings are the same, so they're a direct swap.

Thanks Norbie. So even the drive shafts are the same diameter?
Man I just lugged the whole cradle, rear discs and rear struts and drive shafts down from Sydney!! The guy selling just dropped the whole rear end out of the car and left it complete.
Is there anyway you can check if it really is LSD like a marking or something on the housing?

grab one drive shaft and turn it, and the other should turn in the same direction. the part number is probably different also but i wouldnt know what its supposed to be.

I'd be very surprised if the driveshafts were any different. I know they're the same in Supras whether LSD or not.

The only sure-fire way to determine whether or not it has an LSD centre is to remove the rear cover from the housing and eyeball it. If you can see spider gears it's a single-spinner; if not, it's an LSD.

I posted this LSD question a while back and nobody answered. Crying or Very Sad

What's a Grande LSD worth these days? I wouldn't mind the swap if it was around the $400 - $500 mark. Smile

Grande LSDs are a bit "thin on the ground" (Voice of experience here). My suggestion is that you find an MA70 LSD unit in good/reconditioned nick and swap the hemisphere from that into you existing diff (assuming the existing diff's in reasonable nick).

That's what I did; well worth the effort, and a lot less hassle than chasing around for Grande stuff...

Note that I took the 2 diffs to a diff place and had them swap the hemispheres ($150 IIRC), and I then re-installed the diff into the car.

That sounds more difficult than just getting a Grande diff and throwing it on my car. I'll give you $200 if you can whack one on my car for me. I'll even give you the old one for free. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Perhaps you might start with actually finding an MX83 LSD... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes (Which was, after all, my point, and the reason I went the way I did. Rolling Eyes

Well have'nt put it in yet but it has not leaks and looks clean and un-abused from the outside! Razz
Checked for the red and white sticker saying LSD oil only on it and it does have one.
I guess the only real test will be to install it and see how it behaves!

A worn-out LSD will behave exactly like an open diff, so that's not a reliable test at all! As I said earlier, the only way to be sure is to remove the rear cover and have a look. It will be quite obvious if you have an LSD centre in there.

Ok good point. Embarassed
If you take the back plate off is there any way of judging the condition of the clutches? (Obviously without taking the whole thing to peices).

No, you have to pull the centre out and then disassemble it before you can inspect the clutches.

I have found an LSD from a Grande for $400 from Just Toyota Wreckers... They offer a 3 month warranty on it... Should I keep looking or snap it up? Confused

Snap it up, that's a good price for a G series LSD.

Yeah? What would they normally sell for? I mean, if I buy it and then don't fit it, could I sell it on without a loss? Confused
