Need more power!! Sun, 28 July 2002 15:40 Go to next message
Hey guys. I need to tap into your collective automotive genius. Well, enough of the suck job. I've got a 2SC in an SA63. I've had the head recoed, but the engine is stock, althogh it does run well, and I keep it well tuned. Yeah, I know, just chuck in a bigger engine, but while I'm at uni, that isn't an option. I want to find out what performance mods can be done to this engine without going too far into the internals ie. jetting, different carb, cam etc. I am getting some extractors made for it, so that side of things is taken care of. Any extra grunt would be very nice. Hope someone can help. thanx

Well I don't know a whole lot about the SA63 2S, but I guess you can try all the usual stuff. I've got one of these cars, but the engines siezed, might rip it apart sometime and see what I can find.

One thing I did notice was that the exhaust (and the manifold) was particularly bad. Those extractors and a better piece of pipe could certainly help. A different cam, playing with the head, and the usual stuff should liven it up a bit, but then again I suppose the usual rule applies, namely don't spend too much on it, because you could shove in a 3sge/gte and get a lot more anyway (and have a much nicer running car!)

Tell you what, I'll give you my 2sc, you can put it in the boot, and then claim you've got twin cams, 16 valves, and twice the power Freak

as said, try extractors/exhaust ... always a nice oost there.
if you're not too worried about the EPA/environment, replace the cat with a resonater.
other than that, a pod air filter might give you a bit

For any worthwhile gains (ie more than a few hp), you're looking at a full rebuild with high-comp pistons, bigger cam, plenty of head work (the 2S cylinder head is piss-poor) and a bigger carb or twin-carb setup. This will easily cost more than an engine swap, and give inferior results. To put it bluntly, it's a waste of time and money!

If you're happy with a modest upgrade, the suggestions given so far are quite valid - free-flowing inlet and exhaust, and maybe a bit more ignition advance in conjunction with high-octane fuel (eg Optimax). I wouldn't expect much more than 5hp for these mods though...

The moral of the story: don't try to polish a turd. Smile

well, i dont know waht the 2S is like stock... my 22R got a decent increase from intake/exhaust/no cat ... but if the engine sucks to begin with, you're still going to have something that sucks from minor mods Smile

Thanx guys. Sorry I haven't replied, computer died in the arse. You all make good sense. Think I'll just go the extractors and put up with it Rolling Interesting you mention about polishing a turd: my car is brown and I do spend a lot of time polishing it Laughing Things just got put into perspective.
