I've got a friend whose looking at replacing the 5mge in his Cressida.
Whats a better bang for buck swap here?
A 7mge eng,loom,box for about 1000
1jzge for 1500
2jzge for 2000
These are about the avg prices in Perth, I could get the down lower but I'm just looking for a comparison here.
Any info is appretiated

1jzge gutless, so dump it from the start
7m = $1k
2jz = $2k
7m + $1k = 2jz
depends what he wants out of a motor...

Thanks Ed
I had a feeling that the 1jzge we gutless, but I wasnt sure
He just wants to replace the 5m with something with a bit more power and reliability, but doesnt want to go all out with a 1uz, or a turbo conversion.
I'll keep searching around for a 2jzge cut for him (or a cheap 7m)
Cheers

Immediately scrap the 1JZGE - immediately you have all the grief of changing mounts and wiring for zero performance gain over a 7MGE.
The 7MGE bolts in but you will have wiring issues. I'd replace the head gasket as part of preventative maintenance. However it would be a straight forward conversion and a good upgrade from the 5MGE.
My choice would be the 2JZGE....but I'm biased. If I were on a budget, I'd go the 7MGE.

Yeah, 2j would be my personal choice too
Any idea if that MA61 JZ mounts would suit a Cressida?? How much were they??
I'll try and search around and get one for $1500.
It should be too hard

ma61 uses forward mounting position and front sump... cressida has mid mounting position and mid sump (i think!)
thus i doubt ma61 mounts would work in a cressy

I was under the impression that a Cressida uses a front sump? I know mine does
Anyway Ed, if we go 7M, take AS MUCH meat off the head as possible while keeping it non-interference (or what-ever the term is , damn mental block), MHG (if required) ARP bolts, what costs, power increases would be expected?

You pretty much described an engine rebuild there, so costs will be similar to doing a 2JZ conversion. I know what I'd be doing for the same money!

So a stock 2jzge would make more power and be happier than the above mentioned modifications on a 7m?

ohhh, i dunno norbs...
you spend $1k on a 7mge, and youd have a pretty fair contestant to a 2jzge, plus you have the advantage of her being opened up, and several items replaced and new - you have a better baseline to then work from.

this is assuming the bottom end is in good nick
2jzge would obviously be newer, and odds of b/e being in good nick would be better.
me: id choose a 2jz over a 7m - only cause id work its tits off, and if i were to do that, i may as well start from the higher platform...

Yes you could pull your 7M apart and spend a grand on it, or you could just buy a 2JZ and install it without having to touch a thing. Me being the lazy bastard that I am, the latter option is always going to win! Why make things more complicated than they have to be?

This coming from a guy who decided to make his auto 2jzgte a manual, and change the fluid clutch fan to a normal one
Yes, less worth there Norbie, heaps less

Hehe, and the fact that pretty much anything you can do to a 7M to improve its performance you could do to a 2JZGE which was better to begin with.

Actually both those things were the easier option! Keeping the auto would have required transmission tunnel mods and a strange custom tailshaft with rubber bits in it. Keeping the fluid fan would have been all manner of dramas with hydraulic lines, reservoirs and coolers, not to mention the fact it just plain wouldn't fit!

Ah, yes, but what Norbie did is truly lazy. He set it all up so that there is a minimal degree of fuss later on. No need to set up the pesky hydraulic pump (or wacky modifications to make it work), no heavy autos to lift in and out when they fail - I like his style. Now he can just wander off to any parts store and ask for an off the shelf item.
Really, it's an either or proposition. However, I'd dare say, you'd be hard pressed to get a 7MGE in 'good' condition.

I doubt putting 400hp through a w58 will require minimal fuss later on
But time will tell on that front

The 2JZGE W58 has sat behind 600hp NA-T Mk4 Supras with no issues. Plenty of anecdotal experience on Supraforums to suggest that they right up to the task.

No. The yanks have built quite a few turboed 2JZGEs. As always, some just have to be silly about it and produce insane numbers. A couple of the guys (Dave H - 680+ hp, Ethan Banks - 980 hp just to name a few) are running W58 boxes and have not had any grief.

Let's not forget my W58 has been coping behind the 2JZ since before Easter, and as the Supra is currently my only working car it's had plenty of use (and abuse) since then, including several runs at the drags, a return trip to Melbourne, and a return trip to Sydney! If the W58 was going to cause problems I think I'd know about it by now...

Hmmm, good point Norbs, I had forgotten it has been in so long
But we have gone waaaaay OT here
But I think I have my answer anyway
2JZGE if we can find a cheaper one
7MGE if we can't

I find that hard to beleave seeing the size of the autos have hardly changed! and the tailshaft issue is easy fixed in many ways!

The transmission fits no worries, but the big stupid rubber thing on the front of the tailshaft doesn't.

Nope, Jamie has destroyed one old-style W58, although he suspects this may have had some damage from neglect with oil previously. He now has a 2JZGE W58 and its holding up fine.
