Car Audio Question Mon, 08 December 2003 00:42 Go to next message
I have a head unit with a single pair of RCA outs. From this pair I split the RCA's and put them into my amp. With one left/right pair driving the fronts, and the other driving the sub. This setup has worked fine for me up until now, but enter the problem:

Not wanting a fine for talking on the phone, i installed a hands free kit, the switching power supply in the hands free kit is interfering with the front, and a buzzing/whirring can be heard through them.

My local dealer sold me an in-line filter which nicely blots out this whirring, problem is it also cut's out the sub! This happens if the filter is installed either before or after the splitter on the RCA's (see picture below)

Is there any way i can hook this up to filter the noise, but not the sub? keeping costs to a minimum? The only option i can think of right now is to replace the head unit with something that has 2 pairs of RCA outs (not ideal but was on the cards in the next 12 months).

Take out your Hands Free kit and buy a Hands Free for your phone.

What sort of phone do you have?

Do as he said

Chuck out the handsfree kit, and just get a clip in one
But if you want to keep it, get rid of that filter, and try adn get a better earth on the deck/amp/kit.
Bad earths cause interference (hello Shane Razz)

Failing that, buy a quality filter, one that doesnt cut out subs

Getting rid of the Hands free is not an option, the clip in ones:

a) Annoy me.
b) The mic on them can't cope with the exhaust note. the other person just hears humming, and not me.
c) Don't charge the phone.
d) Get tangled.

The quality of the earth's is not a problem, as both the amp and the head unit are earthed with a really beefy cable (the same size as the power) and both are earthed to an excellent location. (I don't think you get a problem if the earth is too big, do you?) The hands free earth uses the wire built in and is earthed directly to the chassis ( a bolt that goes through the paint).

I think the problem is inherant to the hands free kit I purchased, putting an oscillating frequncy on either the earth or the power. I have bought myself a power filter which should be able to filter that out. Time will tell I suppose...

[Edit: bad spelling]

Solution:
New Head unit(Alpine mp3), Amp (alpine monoblock for sub) and Rear Speakers (focal Access 6 inch co-ax).

I was going to get all these things eventually, i just thought now was the time, and it solved the problem!!

Head unit is CDA 9807, Amp is mrp-m350 neither are overly special but had all the features I need.

For the record the pioneer 4*75 amp drives the focal 100v2's (front) and the focal access 165ca's (Rear). The sub is a pioneer 10' vccs Dual voice call, in a custom fiber glass box.
