Fuel Pump - 2TGEU

Ok I've been researching though all the old forum archives and I still need a bit of help. Can anyone recommend a brand of HP and LP fuel pump for running EFI. I talked to my local Repco sales person and they were very unhelpful. He suggested I'd need an in tank mounted low pressure pump and housing and an inline high pressure pump (all costing about $600). Does the LP pump need to be internally mounted in the fuel tank?

The most common option is to run a LP external lift pump which fills a surge tank, which in turn feeds an external HP pump. If you're going to the trouble of installing an in-tank pump you might as well chuck a HP pump in there and forget about the LP pump entirely. This is how 99% of factory EFI cars are set up.
The other option is to just run an external HP pump and forget about the LP pump and surge tank entirely. Depending on the design of the fuel tank this can work out fine. This is how my RA23 Celica is set up at the moment and I've never had fuel surge problems.
Yes you can buy pre-made surge tanks but most of them are ludicrously overpriced. If you're budget conscious you're probably better off getting one made by a general engineering shop. At the end of the day it's just an enclosed stainless steel pipe with a few threaded fittings in it, but some people will try to charge a few hundred bucks for them!

Ahh the external Lift pump was what I had in mind before the Repco guy started rambling about internal pumps. Is there a particular brand that would be good to get or can I get one from a wreckers?

Carter, Holley, Bosch, they all make pumps that will do the job. This is what the bogan carby-loving V8 crowd uses, so there are plenty of options out there.

Thanks heaps for the advice.
One last question and we can let this thread rest for a long time , what capacity pumps work the best or is it trial and error?

You're only feeding a 1.6 litre engine with 120hp on a good day, so practically anything will do the job! Just don't get a monstrously large one and you'll be fine.

I have a standard 2TGEU and i have one pump mounted under the car and the only time it runs out of pressure is if your belting it around with less than 1/8 of a tank of petrol. I'm just using a bosch pump that comes standard on every commondore since the VL (i'm not sure about the new ones) so you can get one from a place like repco. Get your mechanic to get it for you so you dont have to pay retail and also make sure you get a hp filter to put between the tank and the pump unlike the spanker that had my ta23 before me and didnt think a filter was neccesary. Good luck
