icon5.gif  Airconditioning question. Mon, 08 December 2003 06:28 Go to next message
The aircon in my Cressida, when I bought it, was so good it could freeze my hands if the vent was aimed at them. Now, the aircon is cool but not freezing.

My question is, if it's really slowly leaking gas will the aircon gradually get worse or suddenly stop being cold? Confused

I don't know how to check whether it is low on refridgerent without paying a speciallist to do it for me. Sad

If it has a very slow leak in it you will not notice it yourself with out a special ultra violet light. But chances are it just needs a service as it should be done about every 2-3 years.

The refridgerant gas constantly 'escapes' (slow leak) to atmosphere so you need to re-gas the system every few years. Make sure you run your A/C at least once a week in winter to keep the seals from drying out, otherwise you will be up for a little expence in their replacement as the system won't hold gas anymore.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Thanks for that... What I was wondering though is if it's possible for the aircon to be working, say at 60% of what it used to or if it would be a more working/not-working situation. (ie: no in between period)

Very easy for an air con unit to work at 60% normal use over time mate. Its a combination of the amount of gas in the system along with the performance of the compressor and the size of the condensor that dictates its output/cooling powah !
Cheers,
Mitch.

Yes it is have a look in the top of the reciever/dryer (usually there is a little window) while the a/c is on and see if you can see any bubbles going around the system.

Very generally speaking, the more bubbles you see in the sight glass, the less gas is in your system.

The sight glass was only used on the r12 systems. They are not used in r134a systems

in my 86 there is an electronic module mounted near the aircon evaporator (part under dash) the module had an adjustment screw, try playing with this and see if things improve, but as has been said, if you dont use the aircon from time to time they tend to deteriorate and leak.

I am scared of rooting stuff when I don't know what I am doing... I think I'll take it to a aircon dude to check it out. Confused
