oil pressure drama's??? Mon, 08 December 2003 11:51 Go to next message
When i remove the oil cap i get a rush of air very similar to removing radiator cap when its at operating temps.

Im not the smartest bloke (there a few people who will agree) but this isnt right is it, whats the go.

I know the pcv isnt in the greatest conddition but it doesnt take long to build up, like 5 sec at idle.

Steve

i know with my motor, i have too much blowby. and when the cap is on, there is a slow, but steady, stream of air..
when you first take the cap off, it seems like a ruch of air, but it is actually just, sortve', air vibrations coming from the filler neck... so although you feel the air pulstaing, there's not much actually coming out..

if there is heaps of air coming out, then there is probably too much blowby... hmmmm

Blow-by ive never heard this term before.

For all the idiots like me could someone please explain blowby, what causes it, is it damaging my motor, is it fixable/repairable.

Thanks heaps.

Blowby occurs when the compression rings aren't sealing properly, allowing some pressure from the combustion chamber to leak past and into the crankcase. Obviously a pressurised crankcase will cause the phenomenon you described above.

Blowby itself isn't necessarily damaging to the engine but it is a symptom of existing wear in your engine. Worn compression rings will result in reduced cranking pressure which is obviously bad for power, and combustion gases will gradually contaminate the oil thus reducing its effective lifespan.

As for fixing it, that should be fairly obvious - install new rings and hone the bores (or overbore if they're too worn). Basically you're looking at a bottom-end rebuild.

This cant be possible the motor was only rebuilt 10,000kms ago, new rings and bearings and i havent driven it hard yet. Well not to cause any sort of damage.

Is there another solution or have i been screwed over AGAIN?

Would a compression check reveal lower cylinder pressure, what is standard combustion pressure, i think it about 160-170 isnt it.

Do a compression test, then squirt some oil down the bores and do it again. If the numbers jump up that means your rings are on their way out.
