Suspected blown head gasket

I have an MX83 Grande which I susupect has a blown head gasket.
It occasionally overheats sitting at the traffic lights. I replaced the radiator cap and its been OK for 12 months. Its started doing it again. There is no sign of water in the oil but if you take the radiator cap off and run the engine when its cold there a lot of froth in the top of the radiator. Could this be exhaust gas in the water? The head is also getting tappet noise now when it gets hot. I'm tempted to full the head off to have a look but what a big job and the price of the gaskets is a bit crippling.
Can anyone recommend a conclusive test to determine if its a blown head gasket? Has anyone tried the ACL gasket sets, they are a lot cheaper than genuine?
Thanks
Andrew.

Just take it to a mechanic and get them to test if there are any exhaust gases coming through the radiator. Most reputable mech's can do it.
Other signs can be a strange idle, white smoke coming from your exhaust, white goo underneath the oil cap, and froth in your radiator

I dare say something came loose or changed size when she over heated. Get a compression check done and see if there are any differences.
And as danner says get someone to check the coolant for any contaminants.
Is there any lose in power or fuel economy.

Power is good when cold but after warm up I think it is a little down on power especially if you open the throttle a little. Ecocnomy is never particularly good on MX83 but I still get 10km per litre on the freeway.
