1ggte driving but still not happy...

Well I took the 1G for a drive this afternoon and boy does it go. But I still think it isn't runing properly, it idles unusally high. It seemed better thismorning but after taking it for a drive, it went back into open loop or something, the idle sped up and now it doesn't go as hard.
Is there a way to hook up the old temp guage in a 77 celica to use the 1G's sensor? then I would know it is working..
I want to try to sort this out by Wednesday as i am going to get my exhaust done then and I want to drive it...BAD!
Would the checkk engine light come on if it is faulty? how does the check engine work? Is it a + signal comming into the cabin that has to be earthed through a bulb?
Thanks for your help,
Tim.

Tim, you got it going, congratulations! How hard was the conversion? What box are you running? You will have to call in and give us a look next time your passing through sydney. Congrats once again. Cheers, Niven.

OK I got hold of an old-skool tuning meter thingy, measures dwell angle and all that shit. Set it up so I could find my revs, the thing starts and idles at about 1600 and almose instantly builds up to 2000 and just seems to stay there, even after it gets hot.
I also configured my tacho, was real easy to do, although it measures fine up until about 4500 when it looses the plot and goes a little nuts. Is the black wire going into the coil the earth 'cause that's what I'm using, is it just the old tacho not being able to keep up?
Will a a/f meter thingy tell if it is running open loop? Will it be adding too much fuel like a choke?
Thanks, Tim.

Tim, The temp gauge uses the same scale as the old gauge in your car. All you have to do is get the temp gauge wire from the 1G dash loom, and run that wire to the existing temp gauge signal wire.
As for the tacho, it wont work because you now have a 6 cylinder and the old tacho is still a 4 cylinder, 4 cycle. But you can get it modified to work at an instrument shop.

You can adjust tacho's yourself, I adjusted mine against the meter thingy, it reads correct up to 4k and then goes a little nuts.
The water temp sensors have 2 wires on the 1G and I can't find them in the dash wires. I can't see how to connect it. The old sensors had 1 wire and were a progressive earth type thing, I don't know how these ones work

hey tim... like you i also have an RA28 and im looking at doing the full restore and engine swap to the 1G-GTE like you have done. Can you tell me how much it has cost you thus far? like how much was engine + b/box + ECU? what about engine mounts, what did you do there? i can do heaps of wiring with my eyes closed, but the mechanical and wleding stuff im not so good at.
im just interested to know, so i can begin to budget after i fix up all the bloody rust!!!

I think I have spent about $2000
the mounts are off a 1gge engine they bolt straight in with some 5mm spacers.
The hardest bits were the fuel system and wiring, also intercooler plumbing is tight but I managed to get the plates on the bumper bar back on so it's real tight.
The wiring isn't too bad though if you know what you're doing (which I don't!)

there's no way u adjusted the tacho yourself to make it work! by the way, try usin the blue wire in the middle of the coil, as for your coolant sensor, there's 2, the 2 wire is for the computer so leave it alone, theres another 1 with 1 wire and it will work with ya normal dash

YOU CALLIN ME A LIAR BITCH??!!
I used the black wire on the end 'cause I thought it looked most like earth. the tacho works up until 4000 RPM then shits itself, the dwell meter also shat itself at 400rpm, maybe if I use the blue wire it'll be ok. Other than that, the tacho in the car reads the same as the dwell meter.
I found the second temp sensor with some help from Dylo, I couldn't see it as it is hidden and there isn't much room in front of the damn thing. I hooked up the single wire sensor and it works fine now but still no luck with the idle problem.
Tim.
