TA22 - stock wheel size ect Wed, 10 December 2003 19:55 Go to next message
All

When I got my beast it had 13" steel wheels on it.

Anyone know what the STOCK 13" steel wheels width is, and, what size rubber the TA22's ran stock out of the factory?

You did not ask the question but the offset of the steel rims was 28mm. And the tyres were a 165 R 13, meaning they were closer to 82 series profile than 75, and had an overall diameter of 596mm. This should help you when you are looking at wider rims for offset and lower profile tyres for gearing purposes.
Cheers,
Mitch.

mitch, you read my mind actually thank-you indeed!

i'm going to be swapping brakes and doing that sort of fun stuff so offset and rim width are something i need to take into account somewhat.

still got to understand what offset does and exactly how it works to avoid tramlining.

On the front end, the wheel offset affects the "scrub radius", which is basically the distance from the centre line of the tyre to the imaginary pivot point of your steering. Changing the offset of your wheels will change the scrub radius, and that can have all sorts of interesting side-effects - including tram-lining. This is one reason why you should always aim to keep the offset the same as the factory spec.

I might add that upgrading to a larger diameter wheel with lower profile tyres makes a big difference. When I had a TA22 I upgraded to 14" wheels with 60 profile tyres, and even that had a noticeable positive effect on the car's steering and handling.

Of course you shouldn't go overboard with wheel size; I've seen TA22's with 17" wheels and they look ridiculous, plus the tyres have such tiny sidewalls they couldn't possibly have any compliance which means they'll probably perform worse than the high-profile tyres! IMO 15" is about right for a TA22, or 16" at the very most.

ok.
ta norbie

i'm looking at the peugeot/hilux/xt130 idea for the front brakes - my understanding is that the position of the "hat" (so the top part of the rotor where the wheel bolts to) will be at a different position - so i need a different offset of wheel to compensate for this.

my idea is 15" wheels - no larger - agreed i have seen ta22's with much larger with painted on rubber - not for me. i have corona 14" alloys on it now which are OK and will do for a while...

also need to keep on the legal side of rim width - i think anything more than 2" increase in width is deemed illegal? this is in VIC btw.

Grega,

On my RA23, I had 15 x 7" rims with 205/50x15 tyres and they were about as good as you could get. Plenty of grip (as long as you had the right tyre) and they looked pretty good as well.

Agree with Norbs, any larger than 15" and it doesn't suit the car

Cheers

hey grega. Well i was confronted with the issued of upgrading my wheels to 15x7 perfromance challengers... the guy at tyrepower told me about the victorian rule of maximum 1" increase in width and 2" in diameter. However in the same sentence he also said it only counts for cars that are manufactored after 1985 !!!! Bonus !!!!
So yeah, you can put 20"x10" if you want.

ps. if you are coming to this meet on sunday I can help you get a set of superlites (Performance Brand) for dirt cheap. I now know the owner and have just orered my Challengers. Another aquaintance brought a set and it cost her $130 a rim, instead of the RRP from most dealers of $200-240 (dependent on size). So let me know ! ps, at that saving I decided to get a spare !

Totally with you on finding a rim to suit the era of the car. Its taken me close to 3months till I was happy with making a selection. cam close to getting superlites, but wanted sharp lines to contrast the curves of the 22. And the offset you'll need is btw Positive 20-30

Offset is very important as well as keeping it street legal as everyone has said above. My RA23 has 14 x 5.5 inch wide rims as standard, with 32mm offset, and I am now running 15 x 6 inch Soarer/Supra rims with 20mm offset. So the pattern is pretty clear, I increased rim width by 12mm and decreased offset by the same amount, in order to keep the track distance the same.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Rim width and offset are mutually exclusive. Both wheel offset and track width is measured from the centre line of the rim, so the width of the rim makes no difference whatsoever! So your track has changed, but only by 24mm so maybe not such a big deal.
