Exhaust Smell in Air Vents

Hey, I've noticed recently that when i have air flowing through my vents in my 1990 Celica (not necissarily air con, could be heating, and weather it's fresh from outside, or recirculated) that i get this bad engine/burning smell sorta like exhaust fumes. It's not really bad, but it makes it really hard to pick up chicks, and means that i don't use air con anymore.
Does anybody know what the problem could be, or anything I could do to try and fix it, rather than taking it to a mechanic because i don't have the money at the moment.
Thanks

seriously dude check the engine for leaks or missing caps!!!!
once after topping up the oil in the g/f's car i forgot to put the cap back on, oil went everywhere in the engine bay and there was a bad exhaust smell when the car was stationary!!!

I noticed this morning that there was a slight bit of white smoke coming from my bonnet this morning in the cold. I opened up the bonnet, and (i don't know too much so sorry if this doesn't make sense) where it appears that the exhaust manifold connects to just a normal exhaust pipe, somewhere there the exhaust gas is coming from. I figure that this is my problem. Is there a way i can fix it myself, or anything more i can do to diagnose it?
Thanks

undo the flange (there's be 2 bolts holding it in place). scrape away gasket. replace gasket. bolt up again. fixed! (I'm about to do this very thing to my baby)

white smoke from the exhuast manifold,
fuel cooking in the exhaust...
happened to me once, forgot to replace one of the plug leads, so one of the cylinders wasnt firing and the hot exhaust manifold was cooking the unburnt fuel = white smoke.

What is the name of this gasket? Where do I get a replacement one, how much will it cost? Is it hard to do myself?

I just went through my whole engine bay and it looks like the oil filter was a tiny bit loose, dripping oil onto the exhaust manifold where it was burning and making this smoke. I tightened my filter, so i'll have to wait to see if it works. Does that sound like it could have been all that was wrong?
