7MGE - my vacuum hose fell off.

I was inspecting my airconditioning system this arvo as per the "aircon" thread i posted and noticed a little vacuum hose has fallen off near my radiator.
If I describe where it is and what it looks like can anyone tell me what it's for?
To start off with I don't think it is aircon related. It plugs onto a green plastic fitting and is one of two small diameter hoses to do so. The green fitting is set into a brass thingy that is then attached to a large radiator hose (the top one).
Is it anything to do with my automatic? because it's been shifting like a commodore auto recently (ie: really crap).

Sorry but I am poor and can't afford a fancy camera... If I had money, I'd be having problems with my 1JZ-GTE not my 7M-GE.
I tried for 30min to find a pic on the web of a 7M-GE but was unsuccessful.
Sorry. I was hoping people would understand from my description.

theyre usually vacuum sensors that open at certain temps
they always break off
some are for pollution
i dont think the auto has anything to do with vacuum
usually they are electronically controlled the autos in a 7m

In the bottom diagram the little hose plugs onto the top one of the two hose connector thingies (sorry about the technical jargon).

You can see it in this pic but I can't point to it for obvious reasons. It's a faded green colour just behind the radiator, screwed into the alloy bit the radiator hose joins onto. Note: you can only see one of the hoses in this pic.
WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

Well the bottom hose runs from the Thermostat to the throttle body, so it would be a trigger for the cold start idle control to assist with warming the car up.
not sure where the other one goes as mine is not connected on my engine sitting here in the garage I just went and looked at.

Hmmm... I would guess that unless you blocked off the top hole, or put a hose on it, the bottom one would do squat because the air would leak out.
I need to get a new one of these little green plastic dubies. The reason the hose is not connected is because the plastic fitting is busted off and sitting in the end of the hose still.
I just wanted to know if it was vital to the safe operation of my engine... and to sound smart when I go and order one from Toyota or a wrecker.

It is called the BVSV.

Seems to have a role in emissions control - seems to vent the fuel tank via the charcoal cannister. Its opening is temperature dependent.

Read on. Hope it helps.

Yes that does help Southo and Gianttomato... Thankyou.
I'll get it replaced but it doesn't seem too important for the short term.

just check that the fuel tank doesn't pressure up on a hot day and confuse the vent system and fuel system. or if he valve opens up to vent fumes under the bonnet, you might a whiff of petrol vapour from under the bonnet - won't hurt you might might be bit disconcerting if not expected.
