Give it shit from the word go!! Let it know what it is in for from the start.
Tell me how can you bed in a cam as per specs from the cam manufacture and run an engine in likeeveryone tells you to with installing the cam after it is run in???
Piston engines are a pain in the ass buy a rota
No really it is up to you you can drive something hard and keep it going if you use your head and change the oil regually

with the engines i build, i run in the cams as per its spec sheet, take it for a good long drive 200ks+ without sitting at one engine speed for too long.. drive it for another 300ks or so, replace the run-in oil for synthetic and go from there
i dont believe people that say the rings have to settle in they do that in the first 5 seconds of the engine starting if you have assembled them to the right tolerances
basically change oil and filter within 500ks and dont do short trips during the run-in period. you will probably be disappointed with the output of the engine to start with but it slowly frees up
