7M Clutch Queries - HEEEELLLLLLPPPPPP !!!! Sun, 14 December 2003 21:08 Go to next message
Hiya Ladies and Gents,

I am after some help in the area of clutches fro 7M's. After sourcing a variety of bits and pieces in readiness to convert by beloved MA61 from auto to manual.

I have sourced a W58 (including peadl box etc) as well as a spare bellhousing and h/duty pressure plate + new clutch from a variety of forum members (lumpy and hybrid_86), but there have arisen some questions.

I have a 7M-GE clutch, flywheel & press plate from a Mk3 and it measures like this :
Clutch plate : 9.25" OD x 5.875" ID
Press. Plate : 9.375" OD x 5.75" ID
Flywheel : 9.5" OD x 5.3125" ID & 8 - 8.5kg

Apparently from Ex 7M-GE (a mate of hybrid_86) with the following dimensions ;
Clutch plate : 8.75" OD x 5.875" ID
Press. Plate : 8.875" OD x 6.125" ID - 2450lb clamp load "Berry Grant Race clutch
Flywheel : 9" OD x 6.125" ID & 8.5kg

New Exedy clutch plate with 10" OD and 6.625" ID

The flywheels have a slightly different appearance, but seem to mate up in the critical areas.

Obviously my aim is to use the Race Pressure plate and I'd love to use the new clutch plate, but they are incompatible.

Can someone offer some advice ?

He look in the direction of Allan, Ed and GT ?????

Cheers

Well, as you have discovered, there are a range of clutch options. There are the 225mm diameter setups and the 240mm. The 225mm stuff was used on the older SOHC stuff. The later DOHC stuff used the 240mm.

The 7MGTE used a 244mm clutch plate from factory with a pull type clutch from factory.

Plenty of people have used the smaller diameter 225mm clutch/pressure plates on the 7MGTE with no issues. Of course you need to make sure the pressure plate has a higher clamp pressure (which won't be an issue with the pressure plate you are talking about).

However you might find that the 240mm pressure plate comes in an 'off the shelf' heavy duty variety that has as much clamp pressure as the 'race' plate you are looking at for the same price.

I'd investigate what's available and costing a little more.

Thanks GT,

I guess I may end up using the smaller one with the higher clamp load, but if I use the larger one, then I need to go to another flywheel (hmmmm, thinks this might be a good excuse to get a lighter flywheel......).

The info that you gave me helps me with the smaller 2 of the options (225mm - 8.875" and the 240mm - 9.25"), but am I right that the 10" clutch plate that I have is no good for a W58 box, and that it is a 7M-GTE clutch plate that belongs behind the R154 box ?

Thanks again

Cheers

You could possibly use it with a great deal of modification, but I have never played with one so I'm not the person to ask.

I'd use a beefed up 240mm setup myself, although the 225 setup has been well and truly proven. 7M-Brisbane used a 225mm setup in an MA70. I am aware of a few other people that have used it too.

Im not totally sure but to use the 10" will require the ringgear to be recessed into the custom flywheel quite a bit. If the clutch plate is 10" the cover/pressure plate will be quite large. Im not to sure of standard sizes this large, clearance may be a problem too. Im using a 8.6" holden 202 pressure plate and toyota 21 spline 29mm clutch plate giving 2600lb clamping force behind my 1JZ.

With regards to your R154/W58 question, I know the R154 is 21 spline 29mm, i dont know about the W58 but i would say it is the same, maybe someone can confirm this?

Hi Skip,

Thanks.

I forgot to add that by eyeball, the splines on all 3 clutch plates appear to be the same. Rolling Eyes

Is the clutch plate material a standard organic ?
What is the pedal effort like ?
How the hell did you come up with that combo ? So if I understand you correctly , a standard (or heavy duty) 186 Holden pressure plate bolts to a 7M flywheel ????? Shocked

Cheers

Yes my plate is organic.
Clutch is hydraulic but i will tell you the pedal is pretty bloody stiff, the adavantage of this is you are tempted to put it into neutral at the lights meaning your clutch will last longer Smile
I have a 1JZ not 7m, but ive got a custom made steel flywheel. Unfortunately my flywheel diameter is the same as the ringgear, i didnt get the flywheel "built up". The 8.6" was therefore the biggest i could fit, i would have preffered to go bigger like 9". But yeah, custom steel flywheel to suit 1JZ, heavy duty 202 pressure plate and toyota clutch plate. The 202 pressure plate is not the nicest piece of gear either, the cover is actually quite heavy and ugly Sad

Hi Supra GTE,

Can you elaborate a little more ?
I presume that this pressure plate suits a 10" clutch ?
Extreme are a brand sold (and I belive made by) Adelaide Brake & Clutch, and I was going tp ring them this morning to see what I can get from them and at what price.

Any more info would be appreciated

Cheers
