temporary exhaust gasket for 1jz Sun, 14 December 2003 23:08 Go to next message
toyota reckons it'll be a 14 day wait for an exhaust gasket from japan (between the y-piece and the rest of the exhaust system). I'm wondering if some gasket goo would be a good temporary solution, or if anyone perhaps has a spare exhaust gasket lying around Smile

or, failing that, would it just be easiest to but some gasket material and cut it out myself?

Can you buy the metal to make up your own gaskets?

all the dump pipe flanges on my turbo have a home-cut metal gasket with exhaust goo on either side of metal.

for metal, buy a sheet of galv from mitre 10 and cut with nibbler or aviation tin snips. the galv coating will burn off but wont kill you. Expect to slice at leats one finger while cutting the curves.

The h/made gasket between the face of turbo and dump pipe has lasted for >6 months now.

(btw: the goo is the silica based stuff that cures with heat and irritates your skin when raw it so use disposable vinyl gloves as latex will tear too easily)

but if the flange is supposed to have a thick, bulky gasket then you might want to wait or search futher...

charles.

mmm
'cause the first people to do it had just put some gasket goo in there to seal it - so when I pulled it off, I could see where a leak had developed. I might just gasket goo it for the 2 weeks it'll take for the gasket to come in

Doesn't answer your question, but you have my empathy.

I'm waiting on an engine mount and serpentine belt from Toyota - both ex-Japan. With all the 1JZ Soarers on the road, I'm really surprised at how little stock is kept on hand!
