Will the IS box mate up to the 1JZGTE?? If yes (Which I doubt) is it strong enough to handle a stock 1J?

No it won't bolt straight up. The V160 6-speed from a Mk4 Supra will though Wink

If you make the IS200 box fit, it would probably be strong enough for a 1JZGTE, it's supposedly the same box as used in the S15 Silvia, so it should handle the power.

The J160 box is used in several cars. Mazda MX5, 200SX and Honda S2000 all use variations of the J160.

The Altezza RS200 uses the box and has 160 lb ft torque. The Silvia turbo use the box and has 203 lb ft.

The 1JZGTE has 268 lb ft torque in the twin turbo version and even more on the single turbo VVTi.

It would probably handle the power as long as it was treated with respect. I'm not sure how you would bolt it up as they are different shapes.

I changed to a Getrag as the cost is offset by what I can sell the J160 for. It is not that much more expensive to upgrade.

J160...is THAT what it's called!? Smile

It should survive the torque, there are 500hp Silvias in Japan running the factory box and I'd imagine their power delivery would be both torquey and sudden.

Having said that, using the value of it to offset the price of the Getrag is an even smarter option! Smile

I have heard multiple report of 4th gear being stripped of it's teeth in higher HP S15's.

I wouldn't think it would be worth the hassle as there a 3 other manual gearboxes that will bolt on. W58, R154 & V160's.

Sweet! Thanks for the info guys!

We might opt for t he W58, as its a cheape option to the V160, but as Graham said, selling the IS200 box could cover a V160..hmmm...

If, I used a a manual box with an Auto 1JZGTE, would I need the Manual ECU for the 1J??

Yes.
While you can rig up a clever black box to simulate the outputs from the auto tranny computer to fool the main ecu, if you can find a manual 1JZ GTE ecu and loom, it would make life a lot easier.

Hmmm, I might know where you can find one of these. PM me dude.
Cheers,
Mitch.

That is not true, I have my 1JZ-GTE happily running with a W58 and Auto ECU!!

Mine is from a MKIV Supra, the same as Norbie's.
Aparently there are differences between these W58's and the older (MA61 & NA MA70) W58's, bearings & shaft Dia's!?!?!
I'm not too sure, Norbie will prolly know.

Incidently the plug for the speedo sensor thing on the W58 is the same as the one on my Auto JZZ30 loom, ie. it plugs in.
I haven't got it pluged in as I believe the signal goes to the dash, then gets scaled (1/5) before being sent to the ECU.
Can any one confirm that is what happens??

There are internal differences with the late model W58's, but the bearings and shaft diameters are the same. The external casing is also the same which is good news for anyone putting one into an older Toyota, but probably doesn't help much in this case. Smile
