Me:)
I used to race MX, and have just bought myself a RGV250 road bike (basically two RM125 motors in one) and all I can say is that a 2 stroke in the dirt is fun, but hell you gotta try one on the road
Combine some wicked lean angles, the 2 stroke craclke out the pipes, the smell and the top end rush and you have one hellof a weekend thrash mobile, even if sitting on it for more than an hour causes a numb ass and a sore back!
Only problem is teh 2 stroke power delivery encourages you to ride like a hoon, which always ends in tears

I'm no new comer to the wonderful world of two strokes and bikes in gereral. Previous rides have included a 1989 Yamaha WR250, 1998 GSXR750, 1998 XR400 and now a near new 2001 KX250. I'm actually wondering what brand oil you guys recommend and use. I'm going to call around a few bikes shops this afternoon just to get a few ideas. I used to run Maxima ($16 litre) in the old WR250 at 32:1 It was expensive but did the trick. All my bikes have been something really special, so stand by for my latest and greatest creation yet! The mods have already started Justin

g'day,
i run castrol tt-s... or something like that... it's thew full synthetic one not the semi....
i run it at 40:1 it's not cheap... but you can get it at woolies in a 4l container and save HEAPS over the price at the bike stores....
what mods you doin? i've got a stripped down KDX 250.... with a team green race kit.... including some pretty serious porting... pipe, muffler etc... i'm pretty happy.... the only prob is the weight, cause it's a bit older....

Duckman,
"Two-strokes are suss"
No way GOD made them expensive and technical to keep the dickheads out of the hobby. He invented kids toys, like surf boards and shit like that to keep the brainless poor pricks happy.

Wish you had money?
It's harder to bloody earn than spend thats for sure. Wishing won't do shit these days. I work 7 days a week between two jobs in Sydney (the land of arseholes and hardwork). I've had some sick toys over the years, but by God I've worked my guts out to have them. I'm buying my first house in Brisbane early next year with my wife so this will probably mean a third job and more sweat and tears for years to come. Maybe they'll invent an eighth day in the week just for hard working suckers like me. Lifes tough but as my brother always saids,
"He who dies with the most toys wins!"
Chin up duckman!

Stew,
Mods will only be bolt on shit. No engine tweak ups. I've just added the new Acerbis Rally 2 hand guards, Rethal bars, pipe protector, fat prick rear spring, and some green Pro Grips. Maybe a Whipps skid plate next and some cool green Fox stickers for the side panels. No sticker kit and seat cover this time around as they are too bloody expensive. I'd like some sort of side stand if they make them. Maybe Santa will bring me some nice new size 13 Alpine Star Tech 8's and a Kelly tool bag for xmas. (yer right, said the Santa standing behind me who looks rather like my wife) Thats about it dude, not as many trick bits as the old 98 XR400 but she will still look sick and turn some heads.

Duckman,
You sound pretty switched on. I remember doing my year 12 back in 1993. Some of the rich kids, who had everything bought and paid for them, didn't grow up with the right attitude. They struggled later on in life and are now paying the price in the real world. My wife and I rely on nobody to survive but ourselves. Stick with your family and work as a team. Plan your moves 2 or 3 in advance and trust no prick especially in fucking Sydney. I don't mean to sound like an arseholes but you your life skills will get you just as far as those year 12 school results in the long run. Kick arse dude and take no prisoners. Lock your shit up and think like a crim to prevent crime! You'll have to work hard but be smart and stay one step ahead of the next bastard.

Yeah, I've been helped out a little by my parents, they lent me the money for my car so I could learn about budgeting to pay it back. I'm wary for my mate though, parents buy him a brand new Civic for his first car, he doesn't pay for ANYTHING. I think he's going to struggle badly when he has to start looking out for himself.

I dont have anything against that Atleast you're paying it back...just like an intrest free bank loan, a couple of my mates have done that with their parents(a few have also been given cars from their parents but they have no respect for the car and little for their parents)
Speaking of offroad bikes...you should all talk to kevz0r about his...CT125....booyah!!! We(kevz0r, a friend of his and myself) had a blast on it a couple weekends ago....i think i did alright for first time riding a bike with a clutch(only ever ridden peewee 50's when littl...er...and a friends ct110 -postie bike- when i was living in brisbane.) We got some mad donut and burnout\toe dragging action happening

YZ 125.... well at least thats half a bike
oh year i have renthals and all the guards and crap too..... don't really count that as mods..... some like the renthals are essentials... all bikes should just come with them and cost a bit extra to save the effort of changing them over...

Showtime,
Alpine Star Tech 8's are so expensive, I didn't think they would be so popular. I used to have some Oneil 720's which cost me about $300 years ago. They were crap and didn't last all that well. Thats the only reason I'm buying Tech 8's this time around. I suppose the mrs will want a pair too, shit I better start saving now!

you say bikes should come with the good bits.... buy a ktm.. bit more expensive but the bikes' already modified. i just bought a set of hebo after market bars for my ktm and they weighed exactly the same, if not, slightly more.
another good brand of bikes which is relatively new is gas gas... they've been around for years selling trials bikes but now have a good range of enduro bikes and are bringing out supermotard bikes very shortly

Bexi,
I was just wondering about the following:
a. What brand synthetic oil should I run in the fuel? b. What fuel should I run, premium or normal unleaded? c. Under normal non-racing backyard use how many hours before I should think about a ring change. d. How many hours before a gearbox oil change?
At this stage I'm thinking about using Motul full synthetic at 40:1 with Mobile premium unleaded. I'm also thinking about using Motul synthetic in the gearbox.
In my old 1989 Yamaha WR250, I used to change the gear box oil (mineral based) every two rides and I used to run Maxima synthetic oil with normal super fuel at 32:1
Bike is a 2001 KX250 with about 2-10 hours use on it. Never raced and in MINT condition.
Thanks in advance
Justin
ps do you know much about the Suzuki TS185, I have a few questions about this little sucker as well. I have also asked the above questions online at eatmydirt.com.au with no good replys to date.

a) motul 800 is the motor oil to use and 40:1 is correct aswell.
b) fuel isn't really heaps important and i'm not gonna start an arguement over it... all i will say is don't use optimax.... there's alot of bike shops around who have had problems with it. there's plenty of other fuels around anyway... the premium mobil would be fine (synergy 8000 i think it's called) or caltex (vortex i think it is) but like i say it's not heaps crucial... jus don't buy from a budget petrol station or you'll mixing water with your fuel aswell as that motul 800!
c) depends how much of a tight ass you are! but with a 2001 model bike.... it'd pay to look after it as best as possible... it's hard to say how many hours because everyone rides differently.... so the best way to go about it is just to check it every now and then to make sure..... with a chrome barrel, and at 360 bucks to replate it, you're much better off replacing a set of rings every now and then. check the rings every say 15 hours of use... but better still... be alert when you're riding... you'll here when they're wearing out... it'll sound 'tingy' in the top end.
d) gearbox oil.... the more you change it the better. if you're doing decent sized rides, every 2 rides is good.
oh and don't use castrol tt-s in a decent bike... if it's an old dunger, fine but not in something that's worth alot.... it blocks things up a bit inside.. when i pull off a top end that's been running motul... it's like it's all jus been cleaned... tts.... very dirty

Bexi,
Thanks mate I will follow your recommendations. Thankyou for sharing you professional advise. As usual I have a couple more questions if your not busy tonight.
a. If I don't plan on riding the bike till Jan 2003 when I move north, is it ok to just start it once a week?
b. Will the fuel go off so to speak once it's pre- mixed with the oil?
c. The bike shop are trying to chase the spares kit from the original owner. Whats actually in the factory "spares kit" and is it worth tracking down.
d. I don't have the new bike manual, how would go about getting one of these bad boys, I guessing ring a Kawaski dealer?
e. Every 15 hours sounds fair to me for the rings, is it expensive to get the rings replaced by the bike shop, or should I start using all those bloody tools I have collected over the years and learn.
Sorry so many questions but if you don't ask you never learn. I usually ask my local bike shop but the boys were not that helpful today maybe it was too early in the morning for them or maybe they just didn't give a shit?
I have most other things sorted, so please don't think I'm a two-stroke dirt bike dumb arse, it's just a few little things I wasn't sure about. Lots to learn and so expensive, I dunno how kids do it, must have good dads!

a) a good i dea to start it every week. but make sure you warm it properly... wait till the barrel is too hot to touch... then give it a good rev... same goes for anytime you go for a ride... don't start it and rev the crap out of it. start and continuously blip the throttle till the barrell is too hot to touch... then thrash away!
b) yes the fuel will go off... and more importantly, the oil will separate from the fuel aswell... so jus give the bike a really good shake before you start it to mix the oil up in the fuel again.
c) nah don't bother bout spares kit. normally with a spares kit, you get a spark plug socket, head and base gasket, maybe a baffle... and with some brands a piston and ring. oh and some jets.... so when i say don't bother, i say that coz it's unlikely that he'll still have it all but if he does and whoever you bought it off is gonna track it down for you then yeah get it.
d) order a manual from kawasaki
e) well obviously you'll have to buy the parts... your labour is free... there's comes at a cost of prolly 65 bucks a hour... mine ... 35 bucks.
it's probably not that they don't care... jus that they'd prefer you to take your bike in and pay them to do it... after all it is a business they're trying to run

Bexi,
Thanks mate, you have really helped me out. I remember learning some of this stuff years a go, and now it's all starting to come back to me. Thanks very much for taking the time to answer my questions in detail. It's great when you find someone that's prepared to share their knowledge online. My email address is justinharwoodran@hotmail.com, feel free to email me. I need an expert I can ask the dumb quesions that I'm too afraid to ask the bike shop from fear of looking like a completed dickhead in front of the boys!
Thanks again mate,
Justin
