Ok, i am wanting to put a 22RE in my 4wd hilux. I need to keep the bottom end torque the the 22R offers, but would like to make more hp out of the motor. I planned to balance the bottom end, put a cam in and port / polish the head. But i just read a old post by norbie saying the 22R head is real restrictive, is it still worth doing the porting and what will it do to the torque curve? I would like the keep the torque coming in as low as possible any other easy options to make the 22R go a little better? [Updated on: Tue, 16 December 2003 03:07] [Report message to a moderator]

Any NA mods you do to increase the power of your engine will come at the expense of bottom end torque. The 22R was designed to have lots of torque, and that's why it has little power and doesn't like to rev. Unfortunately you can't have it both ways... UNLESS you go forced induction. From memory the 20r head (when and if found) gives higher comp ratio and flow improvement over the 22r? Look on the yankee sport truck sites, specifically California. They seem to try to do something with these engines. I think it's that their emission laws doing the motivation, rather than power. [Report message to a moderator]

Maybe you can get a few ideas from lcengineering.com. Its in the states but they do have a lot of good stuff for older (22r) hiluxs as well as newer (3rz-fe) ones Tranth [Report message to a moderator]

you wont find a 20r head in australia of course but if you are real lucky the early model 21r's had oval shape exhaust ports instead of the square ones, like the 20r and apparently they are identical then you will have to work out a custom manifold to keep the EFI [Report message to a moderator]

yeah? none of those cams match up with any on the lcengineering website a lcengineering cam would just cost too much once landed in aus [Report message to a moderator]
