Diff Ratios Wed, 17 December 2003 03:06 Go to next message
Hey guys, how do you read the ratios?

The IS200 seems to have rather short ratios, only getting 120km out of third gear, where as the Supra did 160 in third.

Im about to purchase an LSD off a member here, its a JDM Altezza LSD, does anyone know what the ratio is? (After explaining to me how to read them eheh) Will it benefit me in take off with the stock engine?

im buying it for the 1J conversion next month, so its a bit more fun to drive on track days etc Laughing

If you're just buying the LSD, it won't have a ratio at all. The diff centre is separate to the crownwheel and pinion.

If you want to work out what ratio a final drive is, and you can't read and cross reference the build plate, turn the drive shaft by hand and count how many rotations it makes for one complete turn of the tyres. A bit of white paint on both helps the counting.
Cheers,
Mitch.

also helps to have half an idea what ratio it 'might' be too.
for example, with my diffs, they are either 4.111, 4.222 or 4.444, which means that they are all in 9ths. ie, the pinion has 9 teeth Wink

for example, my 4.222 that someone posted to me today (YAYYY) has 9 pinion teeth and 38 crownwheel teeth.

so for one wheel revolution, the driveshaft turns 4.222 times. what i would do is to turn the wheels 9 times. which means the driveshaft will turn 38 times (see how this works??)

or it might have been 37, or 39 depending on ratio...

if you are buying a diff out of a car, always count teeth (even put a spot on every 5th too th to make it easier to count)

I have a JDM altessa lsd diff which is 4.22/1 ratio. Give me the diff code on the Id plate and I can tell you if your car will go faster in each gear or get there faster. The diff is $400
