man ecu 1jz conversion Thu, 18 December 2003 06:08 Go to next message
If i have my auto ecu 1jz out of a jzz30 wired to my manual ma61, thus running in limp mode.

Does anyone know if it would be difficult, ie costly and/or time consuming to convert this to a jza70 manual ecu.

Anyone with any knowledge or experience in the similarities and differences of the ecu's or experience with such a change your advice would be appreciated.

I am interested in this also, I would suggest that there is surely a way around it without going to the hassle and incredible expense of converting the entire ECU loom to a different plug setup.

Juts a matter of finding it.

Perhaps go tot he ALSC Forums - I don't know the exact link, but go to www.planetsoarer.com and click on "ALSC" on the left side.

i am recieving some speed sensor thingys soon

hope to do some testing of them

they can generate a speed signal which is needed for the ecu and stil be able to run a speedo cable

u should be able to use the auto ecu and trick it
somehow
it cant be too dificult

theres a speed signal

park and neutral which shouldnt matter

2nd speed signal which should be able to be tricked

My 1JZ runs just fine on the auto ECU with a W58 and no speed sensors etc... hooked up. No engine check lights etc..

If it is running in limp mode now, it will be an animal running properly. And yes I do know that it isn't.

What do you mean by 'limp' mode? This means different things to different people. Can you explain the problem further.

I wired a manual 1J with Auto ecu some time ago and had no issue with it running correctly. This was a JZX81 but would be suprised if the JZZ30 was any different. In all my time doing wiring I have never come across a Toyota yet that goes into limp mode when a manual box is used with an auto ecu without a speed signal connected but as I say, I've never done a manual JZZ30 with auto ecu conversion so it may be unique.

I suggest you first double check your wiring or get someone to check it for you. Also check the fault codes. The problem may in fact be something other than speed signals or auto inputs. If you're in Sydney contact Jim (aka Sideshow). Alternatively, if the problem really does lie with the ecu, I have for sale a JZX90 manual ecu that is the same as the JZZ30 manual ecu.

And it runs Fine.

Thanks Grant.

I'm converting a JZZ30 from auto to manual within the next week or two. Hopefully I can get it running off the auto ECU, but I will have a backup M/T ECU just in case. I will report the results after the conversion is complete Smile

fwiw - the manual ecu plugs straight in (I was using supra or chaser cut/ecu)
the manual ECU gave a bit better economy, and possibly more power (but I cant be sure with the power - that was subjective, and I was expecting more 'cause of the swap)

BUT you're going from jzz30 to jza70 ecu - so it would be worth checking the plug patters (which I have no idea about).

Mine was never running that badly off the auto ecu... still put just about everything it came across to shame

Back to the original topic.

The JZA70 has a 5 plug ECU and the JZZ30 has a 4 plug, both of differing pin configurations.

It would be time consuming to chop all the wires and connect them to the different plugs (presuming you have the plugs).
And costly if you paid someone to do it.

I think that the actual pins are the same so it may be feasible to remove the Soarer plug and repin a JZA70 ecu plug rather than cut and rejoin wires. You would still need to locate suitable connectors though.
