1J Tacho Thu, 18 December 2003 10:40 Go to next message
A few months ago i bought a JZA70 half cut and put engine, gearbox (m/t) and front cross member in my MA70 supra. Still to this day i have not been able to get my F*CK!IN tacho working. This includes opening my original dash and the analog dash that was in the half cut and swapping the tachos, which appeared to be exactly the same anyway. My MA70 was origanally a N/A 7m. Anyone know how the hell i can get my tacho working? I like to rev hard but i dont like hitting the limiter to often!!! i need my tacho!!!! PLEASE HELP Confused

You will need a Tacho converter... Grant from sixworks sells them. Do a search for previous posts on this topic.

Wildsupra,

If you swapped the tachos over and it still does not work then you haven't connected the tacho wire correctly. If you still can't get it working correctly and you are in Sydney, contact Jim (aka Sideshow on this forum). He should be able to locate it in no time.

As Grant said, if you are using the half-cut tacho and it's not working you must have wired it incorrectly. I've done exactly the same conversion to mine, and although the jza and ma tacho drives look identical, there is a little board on them that has different components. We swapped this over on mine, and used the Ma70 tacho/needle combo with jza backing plate to keep it looking stock.

Ahhh no you don't.. only on 4 cylinder tachos to you need a converter.

As others have said, check your wiring.

Ahhhh, sorry, your'e wrong. The Tacho converter is not for different cylinder numbers, it is for the type of signal.

The product should be called Tacho Signal Converter. I'm about to get one for my MA61 with 7M-GTE

Oooroo

The product we sell is called a Tacho Booster because it 'boosts' the 12volt square wave signal to several hundred volts to drive coil type tachos. True, the waveform is changed but frequency remains the same. Depends on how technical you want to get.

Our new product, to be released early in the new year, will have the capability to alter frequency as well as boosting the signal.

Grant,

Thanks for the clarification. For my MA61 with 7M-GTE, does it matter if I get a new or old unit ? Is there a price difference ?

I'll get of my considerable ass and order one shortly - as soon as I get an answer Very Happy

Cheers

Yes, there will be a price difference but you really only need to boost the signal rather than change frequency so you'd be best to buy the current model. In any event, both models will be available, the new one will not replace the old, simply provide the extra functions of frequency division/multiplication for those who need it.

Hope this helps.

Perhaps I should make myself alittle clearer huh?

You DON'T need a "Tacho converter" if the EFI tacho is going from a 6 cylinder to a 6 cylinder.

best thing to do is recheck where the wiring went on the dash that the engine came out of

the blck wire with brown rings on it every 2cm is the tacho signal

it should come from the ignitor

then u should either have a black with orange stripe
or a black with yellow strip

these are ignition wires on toyotas

they are bit fiddly to do vbecause the wires dont go directly to tacho
the tacho has screws in the back and the power runs thru the screws
just go over it all

u could also get the signal wire and attach a very long wire to it and connect it to another car runnin beside it
connect it to its neg coil
if it still doesnt work the tacho then the wiring is out
if it works the tacho then the signal to tacho is not there

by the way tacho boosters will not change a 4 cly to work on a 6 or orther way round

there are 6 cyl tachos for single coiled engines

and their are 6 cyl tachos for multi coil engines

the multi coiled engines have to weak a signal to run the single coil tachos
and thats all the tacho booster does

unless there is a new model that can do both
