i have never driven either but i would think that the ma70 would be better for drag racing because of the gt4's weight. The gt4 would most likely be better through sharp corners and i would think that a well setup ma70 would be better in high speed corners.

Ever heard of the saying "chalk and cheese"
Two compleyely different cars with differeing drivelines, engines, weight, suspension, yada, yada yada. About the only thing the same is they are Toyota.
It all depends on what you want

MA70 is an excellent highway car car that loves long sweeping corners and high speed. That doesn't mean they're shitty at tight corners but they are damn heavy and not particularly nimble. It's a GT (Grand Touring) car.
I'm no expert on the GT4 but I imagine they're the ideological opposite of the Supra - built to compete in rallies etc.

Hmms - allan and i could prove points for this ..
My guess is :
Supra would be bettter in drags ( more torque , rwd ) , and for open road handling - also higher speed possibilitys from larger capacity motor. I can pretty much assure id have no hope of beating allan on the strip , or on the open road
Gt4 , while not as fast - would outbreak and outhandle an Ma70 thru bendy roads/hills - a much more " nimble and grippy " car as the 4wd + big brakers for smallish car aids this alot.
he'd have great difficulty keeping up with me on a track
Definantly chalk and cheese though for the way they drive, though it would be interesting to try and see where either car has its plusses and minuses ..
A good modern comparision happesn in Gt production racing
EVO VS HSV gts
On a bendy track with lots of corners and braking - the Evo slays the GTS
On an open track - say like phillip island with long straights and big sweepers - the GTS quickly gains ground due to its longer legs ..

Completely different cars... but if you're after a performance car rather than an imbalanced and underpowered pig, you should definitely buy the Supra.
I am a little biased, but in my opinion the Celica doesn't even come within cooee of the Supra.
Supra - if your shocks are good stick in some slightly firmer lowered springs and fit a strut brace.. will handle mint. Stick an exhaust and a bleed valve on it and you'll be running 13's at the strip.
Also an awesome cruiser.
About the only advantage I can think of for the Clica is that you can get some fairly late model ones... but then you're going even more chalk and cheese fromt he dollars perspective.

depends on the Gt4 your driving too.
power wise allans 7mgte ma70 and My 3sgte gt4 came within 10 KW at the dyno day recently in sydney
Is that underpowered ? seeing im driving 4 wheels instead of 2, and have 2 less cylinders ?
they are different cars for sure but i wouldnt say a gt4 is imbalanced and underpowered ![Wink](images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif)
Anyway - vastly different car setups - ones a Grand tourer , in the tradition of the 260Z or e type jag, the other is more a rallycar , in the tradition of Mk2 escort.

If it's an Australian delivered model than $12k is certainly not that unreasonable if it's manual.
That said, the equivalent imported Soarer can be had for about 1/3 of that.

I have driven both and this is my 2 cents worth.
The ma70 will leave the gt4 for dead when it comes to straight line speed. The ma70 is about 100 times easier to work on as the engine bay isnt so cluttered that you cannot fit your PINKY into any holes. It's also easier to mod IMO.
Like 7m said, you put a good set of springs on a ma70 and it will handle like a dream. Mine (thanks mate ) goes around corners like it's on rails. The gt4 will always handle better being a 4wd etc, but given the BIG difference that the straight line speed makes, I would say that overall, if it's performance you want, go with the ma70.

id tend to agree with most of that ..
the gt4 engone wise is a prick to work on - absolutely no play space in the engine bay + there are more available aftermarket parts for the ma70
Striaght line - definantly ma70 , sweepers - definantly ma70 .. more corners + more braking - Gt4 all the way.
you have to do a little tweak here and there to make it REALLY handle capably to the standards of say a WRX - ( which ive done on mine ) but i still tend to think - when corners come into play - the Gt4 is the better all round package
in conclusion - if you want a grand tourer to smoke folks at the lights - get an ma70
If you want a car that corners brakes and accellerates in the hills, with precision and ease - go the Gt4
if your budgets 10k or there abouts, the ma70 is a better buy - parts for the Gt4 are expensive and sometimes very difficult to obtain !
Plus to upgrade it to the next level of performance - an ma70 only needs a boost controller , the head gasket tightened /replaced properly and a good exhaust
Gt4 needs a fair bit more to get 200 + wkw at the wheels but is a victim of more drivetrain losses
