Info on 1979-83 2wd single cab RN Hilux Fri, 19 December 2003 04:35 Go to next message
Just looking for some general info on these old things, I'm looking at picking one up and slotting an 18RG in. I'm specifically looking at an R-engined, single cab, ute back (not cab chassis).
Just want to know:

-How much do they weigh?

-What front brakes do they run (4 pots? )

-What is the steering setup and suspension design?

-What diff ratios are available?

-Is it Just me or is there 2 different wheelbases (tray lengths) available?

-How hard to fit a 5spd (not that it matters much)

-Does anyone make lowered front springs, lowering blocks, better front shocks for these things?

-Wheel offset? (I heard they were the same as Pre-AU falcons, Hiaces, stuff like that)

I was toying with the idea of a cheap 18R-G celica build then I thought, hey, a hilux would be cheaper, has a tough diff, box, and (I guessed ?!? ) decent brakes, plus if I'm going to be torching rear tyres on a regular basis, well falcon stud pattern is useful....

My dad has one. Can check some features and get back to you.
1)
2)Not sure, but definitely not 4 spots. The rear drums are big.
3)Steering box, front double wishbone, rear leaf spring.
4)They run a G series. My dad's 4 speed is a 4.375:1.
5)Two shapes were available - one runs an aluminium tray, the other has a paneled tray. The paneled tray is narrower and has wheel arches (they intrude on the stowage space).
6)You could definitely get Koni to match something up.
7)They came with an optional 5 speed gearbox (most are 4 speeds). The 4 speed is the L40, and the 5 speed is the L50. The L50 box will allow you to retain the beautiful column shift. They look like a W40 or 50 series box but have external shifting.
8)NFI. They run a 5x114.3 PCD if that's any help.

Cool , thanks so far guys, keep it coming people!
I actually shared one with my old man for a while (81 SR5 5 speed, floor shift) , I caned the crap out of it but I don't think I ever even looked under the bonnet...So I have NFI what the setup is.

Are the L series boxes strong?
Anyone have any ideas whether the brakes can be upgraded to Cruiser 4 spotters? I guess brake stuff would be all custom, but thats cool, can't be too complex. Will be sweet if its torsion bar, should make lowering the thing to the floor a snap!

Hopefully this will be a simple, cheap project. Its to be a tightarsed thrash car, basically, a bit of fun. To be driven mostly sideways... It will also Probably double to tow my mates 2T-G corolla to the track, and at the same time I might drag it out on the track and go for a bit of sideways action with the trailer unhooked...

That era Hiluxes comes with either front-drum, single or twin piston front calipers. Twin pots are interchangeable with Hilux/4runner four pots. As far as I know only RN41 came with twin pots but be aware that not all of RN41 have twin pots. Single piston MIGHT be interchangeable also with Hilux/4runner four pot caliper. I dont know do you have any local engineering in these hiluxes.
