Howdy all

recently i have just pulled the EFI fuse out to reset some error codes, and after i put it back it i went for a drive and the speedo stop working, problem 1, anyone got a part number or a price of the first piece of the speedo cable (I'm led to believe is a 3 piece item and the first elbow outa the g/box will be the part that needs replacing.)

and now iv noticed that the O/D (overdrive) light keeps flashing like every 2 seconds, what is the go with that?


(its a auto ma70 turbo, 89`)

This is a problem that I had with my Supra after the first time I ever pulled the gearbox out. A friend (wastegate, also from these forums) had exactly the same light on his car also.

I am unsure exactly what it means, but it seems to come about after someone has unplugged the auto and plugged it back in.

It wasn't an actual problem as far as I could tell, mine did it for years... later I did a manual conversion and just removed the light bulb from inside the dash... problem solved!

Speed sensor is not working. There are 2 - one in the dash and one on the box. Diagnostics will tell you which one it is - and believe me you will want to be hoping it's the one on the box.

i think the auto gearbox ECU won't go into overdrive below a defined speed- hence, no speed sensor, no overdrive.

fwiw: the 1G auto setup has two speed sensors at the tail of the gearbox, one most likely for the auto ECU, the other i assume is for dashboard (for digital dashboards), engine ECU (if no speed sense, ECU will change into limp-home mode?) or cruise control (what speed to i stick too?).

what autobox does the Ma70 use?

As stated in my post, when this light was on in my car there were no adverse affects. There was no apparent effect on the mapping - it did not run noticeably rich or lean, did not start to ping at all, and did not exhibit any untoward effects. It also had no problems selecting overdrive (or any other gear for that matter!)

wastegate's car was like this when he bought it and it ran for 3 years in that state before he binned the 7M post-enlightenment Smile

Some models have speed sensitive power steering... I know that he lost his when his speedo cable came undone during after a track session.

GT - as far as I was aware the 7M had only one speed sensor... and my diagnostics did not report any error code at all when this light was flashing. Interesting...

Note speed sensors 1 AND 2! I love the way the speed sensor 1 is depicted as being obvious!

If one is still working then there will be no untoward effects on the way the car drives.

Its not necessairly the speed sensor !!!

The o'd light flashing means that the auto ECU has picked up a fault with the gearbox.. could be soleniods, speed sensor, line pressure.. anything.
The fact that it has just started again after the reset means that the problem has always been there but the diagnostics have simply stopped displaying the code. The reset meant that it picked up the fault as a fresh code.

Check the auto ECU diagnostic codes and see what it is. (the auto diagnostics are different from the engine diagnostics).

That fact that he said he speedo isn't working due to the broken speedo line is a pretty safe bet the reason the O/D light is flashing.. eg not getting a speed signal from the speedo.

twincam_ke20: That part is readly avaible from toyota, I paid $19 for a new peice.

hey all, thanks for the replies.
yeh, im with what wastegate said, it may be cos the speedo cable is broken, disconnected.

what part is $19?!?!
i called a toyota place around here, the first elbow off the g/box, $143, the small straight after that, $38, then the long piece to the back of the dash, $157.

luckley it was the cheapest one that has broke.

when i press the O/D button, the light just stays on and O/D works as normal, but when O/D is on, thats when the light flashes.

also, where do i find out how many flashes means what codes for the 7mgte's?

$143 for that elbow!!!! holy shitnaz!

anyway it wouldn't be that. That second peice is the one I replaced, I might have paid trade price for it. See if you can get trade price out of them. Start the converstion with "Hi, I've been getting parts from here for years now...." most places will give you trade price Very Happy

yeh thats what i thought, he told me the price and i htought, oh okay, then went and had a look under the car to see which one it is, and the elbow peice is like 6-8cm long! so i was hoping it wasnt that one lol

but its not, its the peice you had to replace too.


maybe ytou could get me one and ship it down cheaper then what i could get it here? Very Happy


i cant ask for trade prices, id feel like im doing something really wrong lol and knowing me id stuff it up some how Razz
