Finnish street racing Fri, 19 December 2003 15:02 Go to next message
I was reading about this Finnish traffic-sociologist/researcher. She has done years of research- and fieldwork. After reading some of the crap and laughing without stopping over an hour for now. I just cant understand how someone can have this naive black and white prospect about street racing. She counts everything car related upgrades into street racing field. Like installing after market CD-player makes you instantly street racer. Yet better chancing engine, it's pure criminal act. Or at least this is how I unterstand her.

She has started to research a serious-matter but somehow drifted into laughing stock.

Here's some English material.
Warning: contains heavy generalization and very naive aspects about street racing.
Try to keep a straight face.

Young car owners do not mind details like a loose bumper
that attract the attention of the crowds in the streets. Fuzzy dice hanging from
the rear view mirror and tiger skin seat covers complete the interior of the
street racing car. Through its crudeness, vulgarity and a signal of danger (not
necessarily a danger caused by driving, but by the car falling apart) the street
racing tradition resists other car cultures, and at the same time, other social
strata within the weekend traffic scene in Finland.

Hehe Smile If that is true which i highly doubt it is. Those Fins are some crazy little riceboys Smile

Heh heh heh. Yeah.
Yesterday I was having some fun in the wet. Losing traction and suffering from some serious understeer around corners, then easing up the throttle and feeling the front end step back in. Its fun when you floor it, with massive wheelspin, switch up to second, plant it again and continue to spin, put it in third, get traction and watch the speedo drop from 80 to 60. Very Happy

Probably not the safest or quickest way to drive, but bloody fun, even if it is just a front wheel drive. Smile

Heh. I envy you. I cannot do anything in the wet. Sad In first the wheels spin, and back slides out, in second the wheels spin and the back slides out, in third the wheels spin and the back slides out.....

Havent tried 4th yet, get sick of it. Charades can beat me in the wet. Sad

I think some judicious use of the clutch and throttle is needed there Caledwvech. What do you drive?

As I understand it, if you feather the clutch, and let up off the throttle a little as you hit boost you should be able to keep traction. although it's all just theory as the only rear wheel drive I have driven is mums commodore and that was auto and definitely not turbo.

Hmmm. Might try that. Although feathering the clutch could be a little difficult considering it's a button clutch. Smile

Heh heh. Oh well, thats what they do in Nascar racing to stop the back end from sliding out. They feather the clutch a little when they feel the back and try to snap around, take some torque out of it while still keeping the revs up high. I'm not sure why they don't just back off the throttle *shrugs* I guess that's why I'm not a NASCAR driver. Smile
