ok guys.. my gf has just bought herself an aw11...
ive got the thing in the car hole atm up in the air trying to change the bloody oil...
how on earth do i get the filter off... i can hardly get a wrench in there or anything... suggestions...
at this point im mere inches from getting a screw driver and punching a hole in the side of the filter and getting it off that way... i just cant get a grip on it at all..

ok after eventually managing to get the filter off by punching about 4 holes though it and getting some leverage on it with the screw driver ive deceided..... to either
a) buy the bloody sst
B) use a K&N filter with the socket head on the top of it
or...
c) just give the bloody thing to turbocamry and let him worry about the whole mess
option c is sounding better and better

ABWmake a oil filter removal tool that grips the filter from the end and you put your ratchet an a short extension onto it.
they can be a real mongrel to get off ath times....

that ratchet set isn't too bad
managed to get a 1jz oil filter off with that (with the help of another guy) but it's a bit of a pain to actually get the attachment on the oil filter, hold it in place while you attach the ratchet, and try not to lose grip on anything

Nothing beats a screwdrivers through the guts so dont waste money on a stupid filter removing tool.

I've found a neat trick for bastard oil filters. If you get a flat screwdriver and hammer it into the roll at the bottom edge of the fliter you can make a nice dent in there, if you then turn the screwdriver so you are hammering the filter it in an anti-clockwise direction it will usually come off without covering yourself in oil.

yeah oil filters can kinda suck if you don't have a hoist...
all the more reason to remote mount it. mine would be almost impossible to get to (ta22 with 4age and extractors)

For starters if you pull the AC compressor out of there it will make the process hugely easier. I would only do it if the A/C is stuffed though, it get's pretty warm in an AW11.
You should be able to buy a tool from Kmart or super cheap or where ever that is a like the one at http://www.dmstools.com/images/KD-3082_small.jpgor possibly one with a screw type adjustment. These have always worked well for me.

yeah ive got one of those type tools but just had a stack of grief getting between the ac compressor and the exhaust.
after taking off the genuine toyota part i see what someone (i cant remember who) said about the z386's though being smaller.. next one will either be genuine or k&n...
does anyone have an idea of how expensive the k&n ones are... id be almost happy to pay a few extra bucks for the half inch socket on the top of it

the tool you need is a oil filter ratchet from auto one. I went and bought one just before and it took the tight arse oil filter off no problem in my s/c aw11. Its a big 3 prong jaw thing that tightens as you turn it. cost $26
