cylinders full of oil!!! PLEASE HELP!

hey guys,
i've had a hesitation problem for a while in my ae82 twincam..where when i went to change gears the car just half dies it feels almost like complete power cut for a split second and then it goes again.
this only happened sometimes--on complete flatstick gearchanges it was fine, and when i was driving like a pensioner (giving it a second between gears) it was fine too, but in between these two, it jolted like a bitch.
i pulled out my sparkplugs today, and the tips were absolutely DRENCHED in oil. oil was, like, dripping off em when i pulled them out. i looked into the cylinders, and i could see heaps of oil down there also.
the thing is, that the car never blew any blue smoke (not under acceleration, or after long idling periods...and i'd checked the compression not that long ago and it was fine), only a bit of black smoke, cos its running mega rich at the mo. but when i cleaned the plugs and put them back in and started her up it blew an absolute shiteload of smoke.
could this be the reason for the hesitation? that the tips of the plugs are getting fouled with oil? and if so, WHERE IS THIS OIL COMING FROM? and WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX IT? and before you say it...no, i didnt overfill the oil.
please help me!!!!!!!!!!!

most likely is that you didnt notice all the oil sitting around the spark plugs BEFORE you pulled them out.... was the plug socket also covered in oil?
its pretty common for the cam cover seals to leak and the galleries fill up with oil. Replace the seals and see if that fixes the problem.Generally you will not see liquid oil in a chamber unless the engine wont run at all unless for the above reasons.
make sure you get all the oil out by cranking without the plugs in, MAKE SURE NO ONE LOOKS IN TO THE CYLINDERS WHILST CRANKING OR IT MAY RESULT IN LOOSING AN EYE!!!, place some absorbant material into eack gallery to soak up the oil as it shoots out.Best to disconnect the lead from the coil while you do this.
If it turns out that this isnt the problem then youll most likely find the head and/or pistons and rings need to be rebuilt

I think I said in another thread that my rocker cover gaskets used to leak and filled the spark plug gallery with oil... When I pulled the plugs out the oil drained into the cylinders. Sounds like that could be the same deal???

thats the thing...i'm pretty sure i checked the plug gallery BEFORE i took out the plugs, and it had a bit of oil residue in there, but not too much..not enough to leak into the cylinders.
and IRA11Y--you said to crank it without the plugs in there to get rid of the oil...wouldnt the oil just get burnt up anyway? or if it wont, that could be my problem, (cos i think i overfilled the oil about 3 months ago, and if it wont get burnt up in the cylinders, that might be why my plugs keep fouling, and the thing hesitates.
also, does anyone know if the 4ag dipstick is the same as a 4ac dipstick? seeing as my car is like a leggo-car, with random bits off other cars here and there, if i have a 4ac dipstick in there i may be overfilling the thing with oil all the time without even knowing it, and it seeps past the rings???
but thats the weird thing--the car blows absolutely NO BLUE SMOKE... how could that be, with oil in the cylinders??
thanks ofr all your help guys, any more advice would be really appreciated.

that depends how much oil is in there.. a small amount will get burnt easily but if, as you have said, there is a lot of liquid oil in there, then it may be that you will get compression lock when cranking which has the potential to cause some damage. its the same effect when a 4WD drowns in a deep water hole except the compression of the water just destroys the piston and bends the valves when they crank.
lesson: fluids dont compress as easily as air

oil in clyinders ....my guess would be piston rings are dead
i just went through that problem
when it gets worse oil spits out the exhaust on startup, hold a piece of white paper against the exhaust to examine the shit

your cylinders are fine.
the oil if from a spill when filling or a leaking cam cover - that is all!!!!
oil has NEVER spit out the exhaust on any car ever made(that still runs) unless a valve got dropped and has destroyed the head and piston.

thats strange cos i have oil patches all over my driveway and several people have seen it spitting the oil out the exhaust and theres hardly any compression on the cylinder that has oil inside it, with the similiar problem of oil covering the spark plug, sometimes it only ran on three cylinders

thats a VERY bold comment to make as i have known a few cars to spit the oil from the damaged rings

yeah mate for that volume of oil he is talking about ("dripping off the plugs") he would be blowing so much smoke his rear view mirror wouldn't see anything but it!

For the record, I have a mate with a Shitsubishi Scorpion that would spit oil out the exhaust big time on startup. His garage door has splatter marks on it. The engine has been replaced now due to worn rings and being 20 years old.

thanks for all your help guys..
i suspect that youre right allencr-i ran a compression test yesterday and every single cylinder is exactly on 155. so i guess we can rule the rings out. i checked the plugs again and there wasnt any oil on em. so i guess it mustve leaked past the plugs into the cylinders as i was taking them out. after flushing the plug gallery with white spirit and removing all the oily residue i'll drive it for a bit and then pull the plugs again and have a gander.
but guys--HAS ANYONE GOT ABSOLUTELY ANY IDEA AS TO WHAT CAN BE CAUSING THE HESITATION??
p.s. nimrod, you say you saw a puff of smoke come outa the exhaust? are you SURE it was blue and not black? cos im running mega rich, so it was probably just fuel?
thanks for all your advice fellas, keep it coming please!
and merry christmas!

It looked a bit blue, but it could have been black, and just been 'cuz you are running rich. I'm no mechanic so I dunno.
I think I should do a compression test on my car.
