Im thinking of cutting the rolla's gear stick down abit
for some more style and maybe quicker gear changes.
Now the question is should i do it or just keep it as it is?

i did this on my old rolla.
means that u cant have the standard screw on gear knob on the gear stick...
IMHO, i wouldnt bother doing it. leave it how it is. it really isnt that bad
but up to u in the end i guess

If you want the std screw top on the shifter then cut the top off. Then cut the leaver to the height you want. Then weld the top back on... Simple
That will give you the look you want, but for a proper short shift you need to work on both ends of the leaver.
The pivot point needs to be shifted up the leaver... So you will need to shorten the top (not nessescary), and more importantly lengthen the bottom.
Once the bottom has been lengthened you will need a spacer plate. This plate is to sit under the leaver assebmly, and has to be the same height as the extension on the bottom of the leaver.
The actualy lenghts are all up to you but do some math and you should be able to work out what lenghts will give you a % decrease in the distance the new leaver will have to travel ;p
Just my 2c hehe

If you take 100mm off, you'll NEVER EVER be able to change gear again.
You can heat the ball and move it up the shaft about 10mm from memory. That's about the same as chopping 20mm off the top of the shaft.
PS: when I said heat, you're better off taking it to someone with a press. They're bastards to move.

i think he means cut the shifter bit in the car down by 100mm, not moving the pivot ball up 100mm...

You can always cut the gear stick down, then re-thread the gear stick with a tap and die set. That way u still have the thread at the top to put any type of gear knob u want on it.

dont listen to these criticising fools, cutting it down 100mm should be fine, and yes it will improve the shift speed significantly. it may be the difference between beating that V6 or not
when you cut it down make sure you dont cut it too quickly as the metal in the lever can heat up and change the composition, take your time and use a broken in half hacksaw blade, maybe stop for 5 mins each quater the way thru the diameter to be sure your not doing damage.
happy modding

Of course that's what he meant. I just said it's a bad idea... unless you want to put your shoulder out every time you try to change gears. Take it from someone who's done it (the stick, not the shoulder). I cut off the top of a shaft just under the thread, it made it only just possible to get into gear. You can do this method if you want, but make damn sure you have a spare stick handy. In reality, it's a waste of a stick.
A coupl eof other things:
oldcorollas is right, I hope you have long arms.
The 92 shifter is angled back and right towards the driver, so making it shorter will make it closer to the drivers seat.
Really, there's little you can do with AE92 shifters. You're better off getting housings and shafts from AE101 and later.
Method 1: cut Xmm off/out from above the ball.
Method 2: cut Xmm off/out from above the ball and ADD Xmm to below the ball OR move the ball Xmm up the shaft.
Method 1: If you cut 100mm off the top of the shaft (about a 1/3 of the length of the shaft), you'll reduce the throw by about 1/3, but you'll ALSO increse the amount of torque required to shift by a 1/3.
If you move the ball Xmm (Method 2), you'll reduce the throw by twice the distance you'd get by Method 1. The extra torque required to shift will be somewhere between 0 and 1/2 that of Method 1.
Most people prefer moving the ball because it's safer.

I must say that the stocky sticks nearly are always much too long, probably because I tend to sit fairly close in any car. Thing is, putting a spacer plate UNDER the gearshift (making a 'short shifter') really is also needed, along with replacement of any gearshift rubbery bits, and decent gearbox oil. It just makes driving SO much more enjoyable! Of course, a completely shagged gearbox will NEVER shift nicely at any time!

Thanks for all your help and advice but yes iam cutting the 100mm off the top of the gear stick not the ball at the bottom.
I haven't yet done this because i have been working way to much and haven't had the time at all but maybe next year this will happen so everyone watch out for the quick shifting rolla going around .
Thankyou Toymods people

I cut down the gearstick on my sprinter, it originallly had a rubber vibration insulator in the middle of it so I had to chop quite a fair peice out. I made up for the height by welding in the shank of a bolt. SO all in all I probably have lowered it about 50mm and it feels great. I however have to angle it a bit for the ergonomics, my arms aint that long. Also in due time I will make a proper shoft shifter, the one I used this time was my spare corolla one, I still have the original.
