Last model made was AE95, I think they were made till 1992 but don't quote me on that? Yes, they are constant 4WD, but not LSD. Available in both manual and automatic variants, they came with an east/west 4AFE running EFI, and also utilised a different block to clear the 4WD gearbox.

Yeah the earlier model ran a 4AC from memory, however shares the same style live axle rear end the AE95 also uses. I've heard utilising the earlier model driveline for conversions is not worth it due to their poor reliability when given mild power increases?!?

My sister had a early model and the transmission was horrible in it it would pop out of 1st and 2nd unless you held the gearstick and when you put it in 4wd you had to sit for 10 mins rocking it back and forward to put it back in 2wd. Normal methods of taking it out of 4wd didnt work.

I had the same problem trying to get a Hilux in and out of 4WD Jas, was attributed to worn driveshafts and uni joints. We never replaced them, even though this was predominately an off road farm vehicle, as we only needed 4WD once or twice a year! I'd also suggest the detent clips needed tightening in your sister's gearbox to aid gear selection retention.
The gearbox and transfer case is a unitary item on the AE95 and runs back to a live axle rear diff.
On a side note, Toyota and many other 4WD producers recommend driving in 4WD regularly to keep the above scenario from happening, I have a friend with a twenty year old Landcruiser in excellent condition who still drives in 4WD once a month, he's never had a selection or driveshaft problem with the car. something for all the Toorak Tractor drivers out there with selectable 4WD!!!
