Car audio questions.

Hey guys. I just got myself some 6x9's from JB. Had them in my car for like 6 weeks or so. I remember there was a thread about running in voice coils e.t.c. And yes i did all that. They had tonnes of bass coz it would kinda echo off the hatch. Nowadays there is no bass. It sounds horrible. I used good cabling and connectors e.t.c. Anyone know what it can be?
BTW the Headunit is a Sony MX 630 if it helps....

How many hours did you run them in for?
The cheaper the speaker, the longer the run in time

Have you got another set of speakers you could plug in to test the output from your head unit? Might not be a problem with the speakers.

The LOUD button only works at low volume, the louder you turn the deck up, the less it does.
So I doubt this is it
And with older Alpine decks, when you use the preouts, the loud function does nothing, its disabled

sounds to me like head unit settings for such a drop.
May sound silly, but are both speakers still working? Only having one running would have the effects you mentiond. This would account for the problem. btw where do you live? Round the frankston area? I can have a look if you like.
Decent speakers don't need a run in time. Proper testing is done by the manufacturers. Cadence are what I would call decent speakers. Imported from america, where they are pretty big. Better well known for they subwoofers, and high power amps.
There shouldn't be a gradual drop in performance like you mention as a result of not treating the speaker properly.
Hope I've helped. Which JB hifi Store did you buy them from? (I know the guys from the dandenong and frankston shops)
Cheers

Well i kinda didn't really pump them. I ran them to a max of probably 40% of peak power. But even still they ran ok. I dunno it happened and deteriorated in a week or so. I have the loud feature on. But it ran fine always on loud feature. The woofers are still running ok. They still kicking but there aint bass! I've checked the connections at the speaker and its fine. Nothing touching. I fitted them myself n i've got it all insulated off with no excess wiring exposed. Well just in general. Speakers work fine out of the box. Run them in for about 5 hours or so... They should be fine yeah? They were usually 200 bucks a pair i picked them up for 160. So they are a midrange/high end 6x9.

ALL speakers need run in time.

200 a pair is a mid/low range, but far from super low
200 a pair should still give out decent bass for at least a few years tho
Trace the wiring back to the back of the deck. If it is touching the body, or another wire somewhere, it will affect the output
Also make sure you have +ve and -ve around the right way, if its backwards, you get a heap of midrange, and no bass
Especially if one is correct, and one is backwards

Ah don't worry about it. I found the fault... My mistake. The speakers are fine. I had a look at it before. The center tweeters are shaped like this. (> (>. As in the center bit. The speakers use two large connectors not as the usual 1 big one small. I changed the direction of the speaker so the tweeters are like this (> <) so they look sik in my boot. So theoretically i'd have to reverse the polarity over. The wire did fall out of the connector a while ago and i think i put them back in incorrectly. Thanks for your help guys. I'll be writing a letter so they will use large/small connectors on their speakesr next time around. BTW is there any difference using 2 large connectors opposed to 1 large 1 small???

Nah, some companies do one thing, some do another
Its wierd, but it stops idiots at home installing them, and trying to return them when they don't work.

My boss tells me all speakers need run-in time. I can find out exactly why you need to run in speakers when he comes back from holidays, but I know it has something to do with stretching the rubber surround properly.
Try it yourself, crank up a NEW set of speakers, straight out of the box, with heaps of bass and see how much they distort.
And then try a set of the same speakers that have has 10-20hrs of medium run in, and see how much better they sound.
10 bucks says the second lot sound better.
But I'll find out the exact reason
And Greg, take a guess, what does it look like to you?

ok, it is true that speakers sound better over time. However the 'Running In' of speakers is not actually neccesary. Warming up of speakers is a good idea, ie: don't start cranking them on a freezing cold morning, wait till movement as loosened the cone a little.
Cheers.

Your system may start to distort if you used either thinner speaker cable than you should have or you did a Strathfield twist'n'tape installation (i.e. you didn't solder the wires)
And Cruzsida... you weren't working on an Excel or something when you injured your self like that... those damned things are the worst on your hands.

You'd be surprised how many places employ the twist'n'tape method, more use it than don't
And no, not on an excel, on a ski rope

Ouch Fark! how did that happen i would like to know the whole story about your hand. I thought it was a damned good edit job.
It looks like theres a chalk outline of the hand as well. Like it was severed off. Mutilated and chalk outlined by the cops as evidence. Lol.
Yeah... Hmm my speakers pump harder after a while. They got a hell of alot more bass than they used to. I usually run in my speakers when i jump in the car... about 25% volume for a song approx 5 mins then i pump them
