1JZGTE - won't run. Heeeeeelp!

Basically 7MGTE gave up the ghost and was replaced with a 1JZGTE. The 1JZGTE went in and ran fine, but always had a misfire at high end which we attributed to running more boost than the ECU could handle from factory.
Aside from this, it worked fine on a daily basis.
Now, recently the car was being driven along the highway and lost all power. Since then it has not run correctly.
The most it runs for is one or two seconds - it idles, but runs very rough and smells quite "fuelly" (if that's a word). We have done some pretty advanced troubleshooting, and still nothing.
* changed fuel pump
* changed fuel pressure regulator
* changed coil packs
* changed igniter module
* checked cam timing
* changed throttle position sensor
* ran without throttle position sensor
* ran without intercooler in case blocked
* changed for another factory ECU
* checked continuity of many wires (eg MAP sensor) to ECU
...and still nothing.
In addition a friend of ours, who does automotive wiring for a living, spent a full day on it and was unable to shed any further light.
If anyone can offer a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated as we're completely stuck.

I have had the exact same problem and just fixed it.
Try to start your car so the fuel pumps turn on and disconnect the fuel line in the engine bay, if fuel is not comming out constanly you have a fuel blockage or a loose hoseclamp etc (something stopping fuel from getting from the fuel tank to motor). Mine was a simple as a loose hoseclap on one of the fuel lines off the fuel tank and it had caused a really small petrol leak in the boot which caused lots of air to fill up the fuel lines instead of petrol.
My car had the exact same symptoms fuel smell and would only start for like 3 seconds.
Hope this helps

have u done comp or leak down test on engine
u have looked at electrical side
migfht be mechanical
when u replaced fuel pump did u check fuel pressure
pump might be workin but fuel press could be low
also have u checked for codes on the ecu chekcin for codes will tell u most of the time if its electrical related
id be doin some tests with a fuel press gauge and check condition of mechanical parts aswell

Compression test came up fine all 'round.
We jumped the pins and ECU has no error codes showing. We will d/c the battery tomorrow and then doulbe check this.
Fuel-wise we haven't put a gauge on it, but we have tried two fuel pumps (one upgraded, one factory) and and two different fuel pressure regulators (both stock) so I can't see how they could all be toast.
Only other thing we have thought is *maybe* one of the exhaust wheels dropped off and is lodged in the cat, causing a major blockage.... that's why the car runs for a few secs.. builds up pressure in the exhaust and then stalls. Won't start up again straight away, have to wait a bit.. maybe that's the pressure dying down in the exhaust.
Will check this tomorrow also.

i have come across bad voltage to fuel pumps on some old soarers
try put a multi meter on the pos terminalk on the fuel pump
should be a blue wire with black trace
and to earth see if u r getting over 12.5 volts when engine is runnin
can u feel the ehaust air comin out of the rear muffler/pipe
is yr cat gettin extremely hot in a quick time
this will tell u if its a blocked cat
u could quijckly unbolt the cat if it has a flange to check

i had the same problem with mine.... it happened when i cut the wire for the water temp sensor on the ecu.... hooked it back up and it starts fine....
when it starts, does it just spew out black smoke and run reallllllly rough? i could get mine going but i had to have the foot flat on the floor while starting it... sounded like a tuff rotor for about 5 secs then went allright... but didnt idle properly... hope that helps :\

check fuel filter for blockage
check fuel return line,
if fuel pressure/flow is fine near pump, then check at engine bay too
tried new isc
