Tell me your RA23/28 Suspension setups... Fri, 26 December 2003 06:59 Go to next message
Hi

I am looking to fix up the suspension in my Ra23 celica. It currently has King lower springs with dead shocks and i am sick and tired of the stiff choppy ride.

Before i decide to purchase any components i would like to know what you guys have and how you think it feels. I would like a nice and comfortable ride that is not overly firm. i.e i do prefer stiffer springs but i have been doing large kms and i would like a more comfortable ride.

i know kirks celica rides very well it is exactly what im after but he cant find what sort of springs they are the shocks however are koni yellows. I thought about re rolling some stock springs to be lower and will also be slightly stiffer or i could alter the rates of the kings.

All susgestions are appriceated

Thanks

Daniel

Here is what I know about mine...

Front :

400lbs/in coilover springs. (These are too firm and will be going for 300lbs soon)

Pedders sports rider shocks. (These will be going shortly).

Whiteline adjustable sway bar.

Noltec camber/caster strut tops.

New bushes - caster rods, control arms.

Rear :

1" lowered king springs.

Pedders sports rider shocks. (These will be going shortly).

Shelby swaybar.

New bushes - upper & lower trailing arms, panhard rod.

It all goes pretty good, but is far from perfect. Handling is very predictable and neutral. I will be happier once I get some softer springs up front (300lbs) and a matching set for the rear. Probably 220lbs/in or so.

Koni yellows would be nice. But I might settle for KYB.

Cheers
Joel

Rebuilt wet sleeves (they run more volume than inserts) that are harder than your dick in the morning, with RA28 GT Celica springs, Nolathane everywhere front and rear, new ball joints everywhere, Nolathane Steering coupling, KMac 24mm Front Sway Bar, 21mm Adjustable KMac rear Sway Bar, and Armstrong Adjustable Rear Shocks - very firm and fun through the corners but needs more camber up front to be even more fun! Very bouncey at low speed/crawling (the shocks dictate the front at the moment), but beautiful and smooth at moderate to high speed, and this resultantly makes the car alot easier to control at those speeds.

I took the cheap'n'cheerful route for my RA23.
- Fulcrum springs (lowered approx 2")
- Pedders shocks
- all bushes replaced with urethane.

The result is a little too harsh for a daily driver, but for a weekend fun car (which is what mine is meant to be) it's perfectly acceptable. Handling is awesome as long as the road surface isn't too rough (damn live axle), and turn-in is brilliant. I have 205 tyres on 14x7 rims so grip is actually quite incredible even though I have cheapie tyres fitted. My only gripe is the vague steering, but that's something you just have to live with unless you want to go to the trouble of a rack and pinion conversion. Sad

Clint: do you know how much stiffer those gt springs are in comparison to the standard ra23 rates? cause i have been recently told that my springs (kings) are 80% stiffer than standard (by pedders) which i feel are way too stiff (unless some good shocks will transform them completly)

Norbie: any idea how stiff those wprings are in comparison to the standards? i drive over alot of rough surfaces where i live (mt tamborine) so id like something slightly forgiving... how bad is it?

also i have spoken to pedders (only suspension shop that is open at the moment) and their springs are only 30% stiffer than standard. are these springs shitty? i have heard bad things about the shocks (even the guy said konis/kybs over the sport riders) but would the springs be ok?

thanks

Daniel

I'm actually planning to replace the GT springs with a set of KMac's I have, and will test them for you, but I don't plan on doing this before February.
