what details do you need...i just so happen to own a monroe shocker catalogue...which gives all dimensions from length, to width, stroke, etc..

if you want, tell me what you've got, and i'll tell you what will fit, or what will fit with spacers, etc.

MA61 / SA63 (same?)
MX62
ST185

I would be very appreciative if you could give me all the measurements for the above! In particular the stroke of the MX62 units.

I have SA63 struts if you can recommend anything else that will fit them... Very Happy

Thanks heaps!

Cheers

to start off, Type refers to this diagram:
http://www.users.bigpond.com/steveg101/shock%20types.jpg
Body is the length of the body,
Comp is the compressed length,
Extn is the extended length.

pretty easy, huh..

ok. believe it or not, ALL commodore, from 78-93 will fit SA63 struts, are exactly the right body length, and compressed length, but have 10mm less stroke.

AE92

well here's the thing...

according to my 'monroe' application listing book... Rolling Eyes

you cant fit ae92 to your car, because they are a full strut replacement..not a cartridge.

as for stroke, etc...the book dont give any measurements for any struts.

sorry bloke. Rolling Eyes

There are AE-92 with cartridges and with full strut shocks.
I have AE-92 cartridges made by Monroe in my Corona.

Do you have details for RA28 inserts, just for a reference.

I'm trying to find something with an extended length of around 90mm less than the RA28 items.

jayem, as i mentioned previously, the monroe book i have only mentions that the ae92 has complete struts, and there is no listing for a cartridge. i didn't say there is no such thing as a cartridge for them...it's possible that monroe has discontinued the inserts for them, and changed to just make struts?

RA28 has the same cartridges as the RA60, listed above.

with a 51mm spacer, you can use camira front inserts, or with a 64mm spacer, you can use ST-162 front inserts.

the stroke on the st185 is 128mm

the stroke on the ra28 is 204mm

to fit the st185 cartridges to your struts, you would need a 77mm spacer, as the body on the st185 cartridge is 328mm, and the body on the ra28 cartridge is 405mm, and the difference there is 77mm.

I'm actually thinking of cutting the strut so I can keep suspension travel.

As my shocks currently are 90mm lower or so, i'd be looking for a shock with the extended length 90mm less than RA28 correct? Then cut the strut housing to suit?

Is there anything with extended length of around 520mm?

If you don't want to cut the strut you could use a spacer at the top to relocate the shock down, Like a big washer on top of the strut...

If you use a spacer at the top your suspension is likely to bottom out especially at 90mm.

Yeah would prefer to shorten strut to retain suspension travel. I dont know what it is with RA28's but the front end is 90mm lower and its still quite high IMHO. If you look in the avatar thats 90mm lowered.

i looked into these shocks for my celica but they dont seem to have the two notches cut out at the top of the shock rod to locate it into the strut top.

WOuld this be a big problem or could i just weld a washer onto the top and locate the shocks that way

RA28 has the same cartridges as the RA60, listed above.

Hang on a bit, this sounds funny. I thought late Ra2x strut inserts (ie post 75 or 76, I'm not completely up with Ta2 & Ra2) were interchangeable with Ra6x, but were ~20mm shorter IIRC. I'm counting on this, 'cos I have some Ra2x konis waiting to go into the fronts of my ra65 along with some 30mm RCAs.

Are monroe doing somehting dodgy here?

WRONG!

Saab 900 shocks are like RWD Toyota rear ones (eye bottom and pin top).

Try the online catalogs & pdfs on the monroe site - you can look up what you have, get it's part #, then compare it's dimensions/extendedlength/compressedlength with others.

Here you go. I did a similar thing a while ago. IIRC, you have to use the online part # search that you already found to get the part # for your current damper, then find out what sort of type it is. Then you can download the .pdf and reference appropriate substitutes (and then have to plug the part # back in to see what car it is for). Hope this helps.
