Choosing Springs Sun, 28 December 2003 02:41 Go to next message
Ok, going with my current trend of asking suspension questions...

I'll be using SA63 struts (which I believe have the same installed spring height as my current struts) so I'm thinking that Kings MA61 Lowered springs might be a good option (front: 185-210 rising) how low are these? I'm looking for about a 50mm drop.

Otherwise is it possible to get the current springs reset to a higher spring rate, or are they only able to reset the height, and no the actual spring rate?

For the rear I will hopefully get the rear springs reset (if I can get higher rate at the same time) or get some made.

What springs rates should I be looking at for a firm, yet not crazy ride? I thought the rate on the king springs was actually a bit low, what say the people that actually have them installed? (I was thinking around 250 would be good?).

Also what about rear spring rate? I have no idea what is it at them moment :S What do other 4 link live axle cars run?

Cheers
Wilbo

I think when you reset a spring you reset the height, but no the actual spring rate. You can try K-Mac, they do custom spring for $165 a pair.

Correct. Spring rate is a function of coil diameter, number of coils, and wire thickness - therefore it's not possible to "reset" the spring rate.

IMO Kings Lows are plenty firm enough for a street car, and I wouldn't be keen to go any firmer. Not sure how it would be in a Cressida though... are they a similar weight to MA61's?

Norbs, with the same 5M-E up the front I think the weight balance should be ok if I fit the SA63 struts with MA61 springs, on a side note do SA63 struts have the same top / bottom spring seats? (or will I need to source a set of MA61 top seats?)

MX62 is meant to weigh about 1250kg's so similar to a MA61.

Good, I was also under the impression that resetting the spring rate was not possible (but someone was saying differently somewhere so I'd thought I make sure).

Does Kings MA61 lows with the MX62 KYB's in the front (and later 30mm RCA's) and MX62 Kings standard height (they don't make lows) in the rear reset 40mm lower (monroes atm, but KYB's later) sound ok?

BTW what are you doing with ur MA61 mags when you get ur 17"'s ?

Cheers

Sounds good, but for the rear I'd be inclined to get a new pair made up with the same spring rate as the Kings Lows. Just take your existing springs to a springworks and ask them for a new pair with a spring rate of X. Easy. Smile

Haven't decided what to do with the Supra rims yet. Methinks it will be a while before I retire them though... this brake upgrade/5-stud conversion ain't going to be cheap. Sad
