alrighty, I've removed the pulley, removed the 4 14mm bolts I could see, and it wont come off. I'm guessing you also have to remove the lower timing belt cover to get to a few bolts?

I need to remove the whole thing to install the non-hydro one, so I cant just pull off the front half (which I never realised you could do till I read a few posts)

there was sometihng like this on the mkIV tech article list, but I cant seem to find it Sad

also, what do you guys use to clean the trench in the middle of the head, between the 2 cam covers, that has managed to fill up with all sorts of crap? (to the point where I dont want to pull the sparks in case all that stuff falls into my engine)

If it is like the 2JZ, you have to loosen the timing belt, and remove the timing belt tensioner too.

Get young Edward to get you some nice 50 mL catheter tip syringes. When the engine is cold, use some turps to wash out the deep valley. Pay particular attention to the recesses where the spark plugs are - all manner of crap lurks there. The syringes can be used to squirt stuff out of there and then you can suck it out. Dry with paper towels or rags.

thanks for that dave & sideshow Smile

I guess I'll have to have a bit of a fiddle - seems like it might be a bit of a pain to get out.. especially removing the timing belt tensioner

I just hope the water pump I have will bolt up - it's a 2jz-ge one apparently, which is supposedly the same (tho from what I can tell one of the bolt holes may not line up)

plus I can terrorise my friend with the catheter syringes - as he recently woke up with one attached.

he said that was the most disturbing part about it - the tube coming out the top of his head dripping blood into a container next to him was a secondary consideration compared to the catheter Razz

and he reckons having the catheter removed was far worse than anything he's ever experienced - which was mildly tempered by a story of some poor bastard who had a nurse try to remove his catheter without deflating the baloon first... OUCH!

edit: non medical geeks - dont ask what you dont want to know Smile

edit2: I also have a friend who's doing a med placement in rural india (part of his med degree I think) - makes me glad I live here!

nope - that was the main problem

but basically, while I was switching radiators, I figured I'd go the whole hog.
didn't cost me too much (thanks to mike and dave) so I wasn't worried really

I was just about to change the spark plugs the other day and came across a boat load of crap in the channel. So I thought I'd leave it also!

on the topic, since I seem to have developed mechanical atrophy regarding all things water pump related, does anyone feel like popping by some time soon and giving me a hand with this water pump?
I gave up on it today, which was kinda fortunate coz it resulted in me getting basically everything else done, but I'm not relishing the thought of hours spent swearing at this thing
