bitsa 4agte question (coils/igniter/afm) Mon, 29 December 2003 15:31 Go to next message
Hey guys, I have a 4agze engine, basically just finalising a few things on it now, I need to buy coils and an igniter module for it, but I am pretty confused now with what I actually need, My engine is mr2 bottom end and Levin top, My wiring loom is Map, but my computer is Afm..

i have only seen the map sensored ze's and they had 2 coils with 2 connections on each with 1 igniter, A toyota mechanic friend of mine said that the afm ze's need only 1 coil, and have 1 igniter..

basically what i need to know is, how many coils do i need, and just the one igniter?

its a ae92 (1989) model engine (well.. the top half anyways)

and, did the gze's ever come with afm's? or am i just way of base.. i have a diagram of the ecu which has afm stuff on it but the wiring loom doesnt have any afm stuff on it, but it has map..

and i cant afford a aftermarket ecu.. :/

thanks

I had a gze with afm and twin coils. I think the early mr2's had afm and a distributor and one coil. Which computer do you have as this will determine which way to go. Hope this helps.

Freak yeah the aw11 gze has a dizzy, single coil and AFM.

i have a friend that bought a Levin 1/2 cut, that had a CAS, twin coil and AFM.

Thanks for the info guys, I had a look for coil packs and an igniter, couldnt find an igniter anywhere (althou coventries didnt stock them they had the price listed at 667$. Ouch!) The mate thats helping me build the car (alot) managed to get intouch with a guy thats gonna swap the cas for a dizzy, So i dont have to get an igniter, and I from there I can just buy a generic Coil pack, Should work out fine Smile

thanks again

If your ecu is for twin coils I dont think the setup you have mentioned will work.

Well I've got a pair of GZE DFI coils if you need em Evil or Very Mad You should be able to use the 'normal' metal can type igniters that come on many toyotas (e.g. camry's) - an igniter is, after all, just a transistor, and technically only worth a couple of dollars at the most! If your engine has a crank angle sensor and not a dizzy, then you definately need the coils. Only the old scholl (mainly AW11) GZE's used a dizzy, and if your's is MAP sensed, then you definately need multi coils. Also, if it's a small port/higher comp GZE, it's definately a 'later' one! Evil or Very Mad

yr best way out of it is to get a matchin electrical set

get an ecu with matchin coils and dizzy

tryin to get bits from here and there u might get wrong parts
and when u come to diagnosis problems u just run round in circles

there are

map ecu 4agze both have twin coil setup
there are 2 types of map ecus one is very hard to find

there is an air flow ecu form a corolla

and an airflow ecu from an mr2

so u need all the matching parts to suit the ecu

i know that some ignitors are not interchangable in toyotas

but u can use a 7mgte ignitor on a twin coil 4agze

i know u say u cant afford an aftermarket ecu
but doin it this way

make sure u get the right parts
otherwise it might cost more in the long run

even a 2nd hand microtech sells for 500 or less

maybe savin for 2 more months and gettin an ecu will save you headaches

just from past experience with conversions
gettin bits from 5 different places always stuffs things round
