icon4.gif  Car Audio Question Sat, 03 January 2004 07:22 Go to next message
Hi guys,

I recently bought a stereo and speakers and all that for my corolla and installed everything except the subs. I imported the subs from the U.S and was advised to get a custom box because of their power Confused

They are 10" V-Net subs. Output 450WRMS and around 1800W, they have 1" layer of foam surrounding the sub and a 900g magnet. Where can i get a quality box for the subs? Preferrably in Sydney???

Thanx Razz

thats a load of crap...they need to be built with a box designed for that speaker, i.e you need that speaker's
specifications.
Also its something like - you dont put a speaker designed for a sealed box in a bass reflex box!

A specific box for their power. No such thing. Theres gotta be nothing special about it apart from its strenght. I've imported a 1500wRMS, 7400w peak 12" speaker from italy, ive built it to a design i did around that speakers specs, and ive also made it out of 25mm plywood - braced. If it doesnt sound good and stay together theres something seriously wrong.

Dont pay $500 for someone to build your box. Download the speakers specs and get a mate/ yourself to do it.

you work out spl of a speaker by taking its sensitivity and timsing it by its power rating.
Note: there is no such thing as power output with speakers...there is one rating: power handling...
for every 3db, twice the power.

for example...a 16w speaker with 90db sensitivity
getting 1w = 90db
getting 2w = 93db
getting 8w = 99db
getting 16w = 102db

so its maximum output is 102db.

Make it out of as thick timber as you want, but dont be tight and make it out of 12mm mdf. Also use screws - not nails, and lots of pva glue.

Sub is a CIARE, and can only be imported by companies using their speakers, like the company i work for. Price will be about $300-$350 i "think" It arrives in janurary so ill let you know then, the box is already built though Smile nice and small too.

if people want them i need to know, as i wont ask my boss to import only 4 or 5. I may end up with 2 - one for each car...wait n see Smile

specs of it:
http://www.ciare.com/pdf/catalogo/CW329.pdf

They have a minimum order amount of like 30 or something...

bridged kenwood kac 828...
puts about 350wRMS into it...it should drive it quite nicely.
You dont need a 1500w Amp to drive it, you just need something above 200-250w - that will be plenty as long as you dont expect to over-drive it. 1500w is its capacity, not what it needs to run.

awesome,

but wont she pop and a bit??
not to say that ur amp isnt up to the job or anything..

i just heard that the best way to fry a sub was to UNDER power it,

i run an alpine Stype 12 inch, and i think its peak is like 700WATTS.

so i bought an amp that pushes just under 700 watts rms, and she works the part,

its all to do with the operator. You drive the amp too hard, you will distort its output, which will blow the speaker from receiving a square wave distorted power input.
My amp will be more than sufficient for my use of the sub, im not wanting to smash the supra's hatch anytime soon!

agreed,

and i mean its not like i push it flat out everwhere i go,
gets annoying watching ur rear view mirror vibrating,

but every now and then its fun to try and give the old people in the car next to you a heat attack! Very Happy

but there is nothing like the sound of a sub thats not over powering, but more bass than 6X9s can give... Smile

how much do you know about audio?
Peak power = 10db above normal factor.

So 700wrms,
3db = 1500wrms (program music power)
6db = 3000w
9db = 6000w
10db = about 7000w

make some logic seeing as i build speakers for a living?

ok here's the deal.

Get the specs.. and with them they should tell you the necessary type and volume of the box that is needed.

Then make a decision on which thickness of MDF you want to use and make it yourself. This way it can fit your car perfectly, be the exact correct dimensions and be just as quality build as anywhere... I have made lots of boxes myself. Easy as to make and 100% perfect. Smile

I have no idea what he is on about. I work for Acoustic technologies. i got that equation from my boss, whos been designing speakers for 30 years, and also from numerous pro audio books.
