conversion update
|

well, after weeks of stagnating over christmas, my project has flared to life again.
Today saw tailshaft & exhaust go in, as well as clutch, power steering, fuel, reverse lights and throttle cable all hooked up.
All that's left is the ignition wiring (2 minute soldering job), water pump install (don't even want to think about that... have nfi), then just slip the radiator & thermos in, intercooler, and hopefully she starts first go
any volunteers for coming over and showing me how to remove the 1jz hydro pump?

Just keep undoing things till it comes off.
On second thoughts does the person who does the water pump for you get to test drive the car to make sure that all is well?

I think I could sacrifice a test drive... not immediately tho. clutch & brake lines need to be bled, new rubber put on the wheels etc before anybody (including me) takes it for a drive

have you removed the water pump before, or just offering mechanical assistance?
I'm going to give it another crack tomorrow... and since there's nothing much else to do, I'll probably end up working it out (fingers crossed)

After seeing that video should that not be :
MA63 - Hacked, Slashed, Striped & Wrecked then Cubed

Both really.
I've done the non hydro pump on a 1JZ Soarer a while ago and they aren't to bad a job once you get the bits out of the way.
They are a two piece thing with a plate on the block and the heater pipes going into the back of it and the pump bolts to this plate and goes behind the timing belt so you need to remove the belt from memory to get the pump off and back on again.

Yep, belt needs to come off. There are a couple of bolts behind the water pump that are kinda hard to get at (at least they are on a 2JZ) but if you approach them from under the car it's not too hard. Apart from that it's all plain sailing, just a pain in the arse!

another update
Thanks to the sexy Ed man himself, my engine now more closely resembles and engine. half an hour with the koala kare degreaser (which rocks I might add) and everything was ready for reassembly, which went totally smoothly.
carpets arrive tuesday, interior will go in then. hopefully tomorrow I can finish the shroud & radiator.... then it should be fairly simple to put everyhitng together.
That's best case scenario of course

well, it was rocket science, what can I say?
In amongst discussing a possible alternate theory of consciousness, and cognitive delay, koala degreaser + spray gun + toothbrushes made everything moderately shiny

Methinks I was expecting a little too much I mustn't have scrubbed it enough.
Then again, I have the basis for comparison that I used oven cleaner on my block

It was amazing to see how my block could actually look like cast iron again. The over cleaner was awesome, big chunks of oil and crap removed itself from the engine Suppose thats what having two cracked cam cover seals over a while had done to it, compared to my 1GEU it was filthy.

Draven,
Congrats - you're powering along much faster than I! Out of interest - what tailshaft are you using? Hilux, stock or custom?

thanks for the advice on the knox
my rad is standard ma61 end tanks, with a tri-core centre, cooled by a 1-piece twin fan/shroud from an AU falcon (which is VERY close to an exact fit)

Ah-ha! Thanks heaps for that Greg!
And, if ya don't mind, coulsja let us know how you get on with the carpet? I'm curious to know if I just got a bodgey rear, or if they're all out of whack. Mine was too baggy around the trans tunnel. A good thing I was cutting'x'es and not holes, as once I got the heat gun onto it, it changed pretty majorly! Actually, I learnt quite a bit (the hard way) about auto carpet-laying doing mine - feel free to ask if you have any questions.
