icon1.gif  OBD, scan tool diagnostics, and toyota check pins.... Sun, 04 January 2004 09:42 Go to next message
okay - here goes...

im interested in making a funky Palm-Pilot based scan tool for looking at the engine and ECU parameters of my 7m (OBD, not OBD2)

i got the idea from here:

http://mmcd.meditprofi.ru/

now, that circuit is designed for a mutsubishi, however, i was thinking it would be worth a crack at trying to interface it with the toyota serial data output pin (VF). perhaps the addresses of the data are different, i dunno, i cant find any further info, but im willing to find out.

now looking at this (page 5):

http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h47.pdf

it would seem that in order to get the serial data pin (VF) to function, one needs to bridge terminals TE2 and E1(earth). problem is, my good ol 7m doesnt seem to have TE2 (only has T, which is equiv of TE1 from what i can figure - used for error codes and setting timing etc))... yet it does still has a VF output pin.

now i cant seem to find any info on what to do to get VF to function in my setup, anyone have any ideas? this is what the diag box of my 7m looks like:

http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/loats/toymods/DIAGpinout.gif

so with that in mind, anyone then have any ideas as to whether that OBD palm scan tool would work with a toyota? data addresses? any other thoughts? i have a spare palm pilot that i think would be great to use for something like this, so any ideas, fire away!

cheers
ed

jeezus farking ie munged my reply Evil or Very Mad

the hardest part would be sussing the hex codes for the different faults. the hex codes would be specific to the mitsu engine in that case - i remember helping a guy i know do the same with efilive and my old vn commodore (160 baud output)

that circuit on that page you list is very similar to the 8192 or obdii compliant VR onwards commodores - using the max232 chip ect.

regarding putting it thru to the palm - unless you can manipulate the software somewhat might be worth a look in.

pity these are not obdi compliant : http://www.auterraweb.com/scantools.html

see if this helps too :

Ed.

Without the TE2 pin you will not get an obd1 data stream from the 7mge. As far as I know the mx83 cressida was the only 7M ecu with the TE2 connector. Without TE2 the VF output is only basic fuel trim in 1.25 volt steps to 5v

I have tried this on my car and managed to get the data stream to work but nobody seems to know what the values convert to. The docs on autoshop101 refer to appendix A for an explanation of the data but the fellow running the site has been unable to supply this information. Maybe if you ask him nicely too, he may go hunting a little harder and we can both get it Smile

The data stream is 100 baud and I think 22 bytes long. Ive already written some software to capture and interpret the data but without the conversion tables its pretty useless

steve.

i might be able to get that appendix from toyota, they let me sit and hunt through all their workshop manuals, so ill see what i can dig up.

unfortunately, given i dont have a TE2 pin, the whole affair is a little pointless for me, but ill be happy to help out getting some data to get this to work.

what a pain! wouldve been nice to log what was going on Sad

the source code for the palm software is available on that site Nod

could be easy enough to modify if we got the data info to do it

u can buy similar things from japan for 400 or 500 bucks i think

theyre called techtoms

they have diff models one for toyota
nissans etc

i have a snapon scanner and that does toyotas

the hard thing is u need different moduels in the scanner for different toyotas

my scanner works on some 20vs and 4ages and most aussie cars

but when most my work is on imports its no use to me sometimes

toyota all use a similar diag plug unless u get to the obd2 plugs in later lexus cars and similar vehicles

but my scanner will only tell u the basics
its just as easy to use a multimeter and checking for codes

Thanks Ed,

if you could find appendix A it would be appreciated. It should also work for the 1UZ ecu in the cressida I hope as that is coming along nicely.

I should have an auto 7mge ecu spare after the conversion if that helps move things along.

(back from the dead)
Did anyone ever get any further with this?
I'm interested in dragging the info out of my manual JZA70 ECU. The people that make techtoms don't make them for the early JZA70s any more. There is a place that sells interface chips to convert the data to RS-232 (for only about AU$30) , but you have to know what obd standard your ECU is using so you can order the right chip.
Anyone know how to find this out?

Thanks

Peter
