NA cams in SC
Has anyone tried putting in NA cam into a 4agze ?

I put them in yesterday, but now the valves stay open.
I did a compression test to prove the point.
I thought they were similar.

Any help would be great.

The engine was cranking really easy.

Would i need to put shims.

of course you must expect for there to be a difference from one cam to the next. although the cams are "similar" you should always check the valve clearances and the shims adjusted accordingly whenver doing any cam or valve work. my suggestion is that the N/A cams have a slightly larger base circle than the ZE cams. this would result in the valves not closing correctly. first thing i suggest is cheching these clearances.

other than that, it could be that the cam timing is not correct. it would pay to manually check that the cam timing is correct by lining up no. 1 and ensure the cams on no.1 are rocking. if you are not farmiliar with this procedure, get it checked out by someone who know's what to look for.

yea, as dorikin said, you must reset the shims, I checked with my local head joint about getting this done, and they gave me a list of what would be done if they where to do it, quite a bit of fiddling required with the 4age's apparently, anyway, good luck...

Freak the guy's in the states told me that when i swap my cams over, to use the exact shims from the ge in the exact place they came from, then measure the clearances and away you go, they said to NOT use the ze shims.

Using the shims out of the GE would be nice, but shims are VERY fine things and valve length will vary shim thickness.

In the book 4AG II, what they do is pull all the shims out in the order they were (using damper box split into 16 compartments).
Check flatness of shims: make them.
Measure the thickness of each shim, write it down.
Measure the required shim thickness in the head.
Shuffle the shims around so that the correct thickness shims are where they should be. Those too thin need to be replaced. You should be lucky enough to simple shuffle them around needing no new ones.
The shims can be made thinner using grinding stone: sort of like what you sharpen knife's on. just make sure its VERY flat.
You can buy shims from Toyota in varying thickness's.
Adjusted (grind) them so they are correct thickness.
Put it all back together.

Above is all from memory, I havn't seen my book in a few month's. It's all in japanese, but that is the jist I got from the pictures. You don't 'grind' the shims more like wear away the surface a LITTLE bit. There is a better term but it does not come to mind.

Can anybody agree/disagree or add anything I have left out?

It sounds fiddly because it is. Have fun.

Has anyone ever adjusted their valve clearances and had a noticable improvement, just out of curiosity?
I'm not talking really worn or out of whack clearances being fixed up, I'm talking about doing (to some extend) what's outlined above. When some of the clearances are over the limit (10 to 30 thou on a bigport I think?) and some are close to it but still within limits, if it's brought back to as close to 10 thou as you can get on all valves, how much difference does it make?
To get it really accurate, the valves would have to be removed and measured and taken into account though, which makes it a pretty big job.

I'm thinking about doing mine, some are over & some are within the limit, so maybe a shuffle will do it. First I gotta get my hands on a micrometer, and find out the deal with this toyota tool to remove the shims without removing the cams.
Anyone got one of these? Would it be hard to make?
