temp controller for thermo fan?

i've got two fans (12" and 16" Davies) inside the bay of the 18R turbo RA40 (just) - and am looking for a temp switch to control the larger fan? the smaller fan runs 100%.
i've got a mechanical thermostat that gets shoved inside the upper radiator pipe where it attached to the top tank - but it tends to leak under pressure (was bought with larger fan) plus it's bulky hardware.
has anbody know of simple controller that uses electrical sensor?
i recall seeing a DIY kit on autospeed that used a sensor mounted in the airflow to control a fan but cannot find any temp-control kits on their site now.
at the moment i'm manually driving the fan from inside car- but it's a pain at times plus at night you gotta search in the dark for the switch.
do any of the newer (e.g. post 18R) engines use a simple thermo switche to drive thermo-fan relays? I could put a T-conntector at the current temp gauge sender and have two sensors - but would prefer using a sensor that can sit in air flow or be bolded to the head near the front ofthe engine.
tia,
charles.

Are you running aftermarket management?
Most can control a thermo at a set temperature

no ECU at present - is suck-thru carbi infront of a T03/05 hybrid turbo - only computer in the car is inside the stereo.
am going to megasquirt-n-spark it once i get a custom intake manifold made but it will only control spark+fuel.
but until then ...

Try Jaycar
They have a lot of car kits that can do some cool stuff, otherwise, just make sure the radiator doesnt leak
I used a helluva lot of gasket goo on mine to prevent leaks.
It leaks a bit when cold, but once its warm, its all good

Mate i've done this plenty of times.. If you go to auto one or somewhere they sell thermo fan switches. You need to tap it into the water supply somewhere. On my car I had a sensor that wasn't being used around the thermo stat and put it there. Other times i've had a threaded nut welded to the radiator to tap it into.
Anyhows.. They are around $40 and you can pic the on/off temp. I got one that switches on at 85 deg and off at 80 deg. It just had 1 terminal on it that i've got wired up to earth a relay for the fan.
Easy and neat! So much better than those crappy davies craig devices.

joel: these are about the same size as the temp gauge sensor?
i'm wondering if there's something i can pull off the (currently unused) 1G GTE? it's got a temp switch for the cold-start injector - but i would have to re-jig the wiring so the relay triggers when the sensor goes O/C - but i think the switching point would be a bit low for what i'm after?
allan: yep... they look pretty damn good but when you convert it to AUD it's $105 plus freight (or should that be fright?) ... tho, it's just the kind of gadget-like thing i'd like...

Yeah they look almost identical to a temp sensor.
Did the 1G have electric thermos or clutch fan? I don't know the 1G well, but the 4AGE from the AE82 corolla has electric thermo fans standard, so has a sensor in the remote thermostat for this. Whereas the 3t-gte had a clutch fan so no sensor that would work.
Cold start switching would be around 20 degrees from memory.
So you could get a switch from a 4age fwd corolla.. I'm sure there is heaps of other cars that have this switch also, but then I figure most newer ones the ECU would switch the fan on.
Cheers

the 1G i've got had thermo fans - and the wiring diagram i've got has no switching of fans - so maybe i've got a suitable temp switch out in the garage (and also slaps self in back of head for not thinking of this earlier)?
otherwise (and as i'm on holidays) it's off the wreckers wheneveriwantto

A lot of cars had the thermo controller built into the base off the radiator (bottom tank), its prolly there
